Julianne Kaye's Quick & Easy Beauty Tips for Busy Moms

Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider, brighter and more awake. A trick of mine is to curl lashes AFTER mascara because it will actually hold the curl longer and better! A lot of women have it engrained in them that if they curl after mascara application their lashes will fall out... but that won't happen if your mascara is dry first. Just gently squeeze and pulse at the base of the lashes, that's all you need. Shu Uemura eyelash curlers are the best.

Cream Shadow can be your best friend when you're in a time crunch: it makes it easy to do a quick application without any problems with fallout that tends to happen with eyeshadow. Smudge with your fingers or a brush, a cream shadow is super blendable and customizable to the intensity you want to achieve as you layer. NARS Pearl Beach is a gorgeous daytime color.

A highlighting concealer pen is a great way to brighten up your complexion because it illuminates and conceals. Portable and easy to use under the eyes, down the bridge of the nose, and the high points of the cheekbones for a mid day pick me up. Try Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch.

A strong lip statement in coral or fuchsia can brighten up your look If you have very little time in the morning. Keep the rest of your makeup minimal and you'll be right on trend for Spring and Summer! Maybelline 24 hour color in Endless Ruby is gorgeous, glossy and lasts all day.

Skip the two part process of using liquid foundation and powder with a powder foundation. A product like this fuses the versatility of both in one quick and easy step. Most formulations are equally beneficial to the skin fighting free radicals and boast a high SPF like Physicians Formula, which has an SPF of 50.

DIY Tips for Achieving the Ultimate Look for Prom 2012 from Celebrity Hairstylist & Makeup Artist

With the arrival of the warm weather, one can be sure that there is only one thing on the minds of high school seniors everywhere: prom! Between securing a dress, shoes, bag, and accessories for the event, the cost can be difficult to contain. One money-saving option that has become increasingly popular is creating hair and makeup looks at home for the big night. Here, celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist and owner of Gocha Salon, Gocha Hawkins shares her favorite classic looks for prom that will flatter any style or personality.

Romantic Flair

Who can resist bringing a touch of romance to the party? With a look this delicate, the focus should be on emphasizing best features and keeping natural beauty a top priority, says Gocha. “This look has always been and will remain a popular option for young women because of its understated elegance. With a minimalistic approach to makeup and a simple yet defined hairstyle, young ladies can let their inner beauty shine and not spend the night worrying about touch-ups in the bathroom. This version of romantic makeup and hair involves flowing curls with flecks of pink and gold on the face for a luminous boost.”

Hair: To achieve soft curls, add a volumizing product for added texture. Important: comb the product through hair so that it is evenly divided from root to tip. Blow dry and take a curling iron (1 or 2 inch barrels will produce the desired effect) to small sections of hair. Throughout the night, the curls will loosen, so don’t worry about the appearance of tighter ringlets. Spray with a flexible hold hairspray (Gocha likes Dove Flexible Hold Aerosol Hairspray with Natural Movement, $4.59 | Buy 2, Save $1 at Drugstore.com). Right before heading out the door, run fingers through curls and finish with a wax product to maintain shape and contain frizz (such as Bumble and Bumble Styling Wax, $23 at Sephora).

· Makeup: As this makeup style calls for pink and gold hues, it’s important to test out products as certain shades look better with specific skin tones. For instance, if skin is an autumn or a spring tone (golden undertones with greenish veins), a warm coral will be most flattering. If skin tone is a winter or summer (blue undertones with purplish veins), a pink with a hint of purple will make features pop. Use one product that doubles as a lip and blush tint (like Sephora’s Lush Flush Lip & Cheek Stain, $12) and swipe on lips and cheeks. Use a natural eyeshadow with flecks of gold and lightly apply black liner to the rims of eyes. Finish with a coat of mascara for the ultimate flirtatious eye flutter.

Glamour Girl

If the red carpet has taught us anything over the last few months, it’s that the chignon will always have a place in Hollywood’s go-to hair repertoire. And what’s more classic and glamorous than a bold red lip and smoky eye pairing? “Are you one of those girls who admire the old-Hollywood glamour of pinups like Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Brigitte Bardot, and Betty Grable? Go all out for prom with this fool-proof formal look. I would suggest sporting a modified version of the standard chignon by adding volume because this summer, it’s all about big hair! In terms of makeup, this style is all about red lips and smoky eyes,” Gocha explains.

· Hair: The best thing about this updo is that it will stay in place throughout the evening, so feel free to dance the night away. To achieve this look, start by prepping hair with mousse (Gocha’s favorite: Biosilk Silk Mousse, $11.62 at Drugstore.com). Tease hair at the crown, taking particular care if the texture is fine. Comb back into a low ponytail, looping it around itself and securing with bobby pins. To ensure that the style stays in place for the night, spray with a flexible hairspray that doesn’t leave hair sticky or stiff so that the look remains soft.

· Makeup: Dramatic makeup is the name of the game when it comes to glamour. Make sure to choose the right red lip hue for your skin tone. For autumns and springs, go with a warm red with an orange undertone; if skin is a winter or a summer, a pinky red with a bluish undertone looks best. Start by moisturizing, and apply lipstick with a brush. It allows for more control. After, blot with a tissue and add concealer at the corners of the mouth to ensure that there is no smudging. For the perfect smoky eye, use a palate containing different natural hues and prep the eyelid with foundation. Apply liner in the darkest color of the palate across upper and lower lash lines. Use the lightest color for above the eyelid, up to the brow bone. Blend with finger to smudge the liner and apply a few swipes of mascara to set the look.

Fashion Forward

Are you always the first one of your friends to sport the hottest trend from the runways? Why should prom be any different? Here, Gocha explains some of the best looks in makeup and hair from the spring and summer collections. “For the girl who’s always ahead on beauty trends, I’ve created a look that incorporates the cutting edge styles we saw on the runways for spring 2012. An updated version of the cat eye with pops of bold colors and a voluminous, messy ponytail bring together the best of fashion week beauty,” says Gocha.

· Hair: Nothing is more “right now” than a ponytail that sports high volume. Not only is this look easy to achieve, it’s perfect for a sticky summer evening spent sweating on the dance floor. Once out of the shower, allow hair to dry. Then, tease hair at the crown by applying hairspray while you run a comb through in short, quick strokes. After, simply twirl and pin back hair into a twist from front to back. Secure with pins and/or a small hair tie, depending on hair’s texture.

· Makeup: Two styles that looked great on the spring runways were the updated cat-eye (think singer Adele) and pops of bright eye shadows. For maximum impact, choose a color that complements your dress, rather than an exact matching shade. For the cat-eye look, use a liquid liner (like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, $20 at Sephora) and draw a line from the inner to outer corner. If hands are a little shaky, go halfway from either side and meet in the middle. Use a cotton swab with makeup remover to create the right shape at the outer corner. Finish with mascara. Because the end result is a dramatic eye, keep other makeup to a minimum, using lip and cheek stains that are similar to natural coloring.

“Prom is about finding the perfect look for you by blending from classic variations of formal styles. The most important thing to remember is to be true to yourself and your personality and have fun with your look! Nothing is more beautiful than embracing your best features and feeling confident in your inner and outer beauty,” says Gocha.

Fool-Proof Spring & Summer Hair Trends from Celebrity Hairstylist

While some may argue that winter never truly arrived, there is no doubt that for most of us, spring has sprung. With a new season comes new trends, and the world of hair is no exception. From recent red carpet events to runway shows, celebrities and style trendsetters alike are blazing the trail of the most sought-after looks for the warmer months. The question becomes how to make them work for everyday wear. Here are fool-proof versions of hot spring and summer looks from celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist and owner of Gocha Salon, Gocha Hawkins, with emphasis on low-maintenance styling, also known as a woman’s best friend.

Tight Top Knot

The updo is back this spring, and arguably the most popular style of the moment is the upswept top knot. “More than ever, we see people taking more chances with hair. The top knot has been a favorite of celebrities for a long time, and now more women are looking to capitalize on this easy, yet impactful, trend. One thing to remember when doing the top knot is that your hair should be shoulder length or longer; anything shorter, and your style will be much more difficult to achieve. When you add too much product, it can be sticky and unflattering,” says Gocha.

· Gather hair as if putting up in a high, slicked-back ponytail. If hair is thin and does not have a lot of natural volume, tease gently and pull back, securing with hair elastic.

· Divide hair into two sections, winding them around one another from the base of the ponytail.

· Using hairpins, secure hair by pinning the base and then any additional loose hair. The key is to keep most of it contained so the look emphasizes the knot, like Jennifer Lopez’s look at this year’s Academy Awards.

· Spray with hair spray to keep in place throughout the day or night.

Effortless Waves

While for some of us, beachy hair may be easier to achieve, for those without a natural wave, it takes a little practice to get the right look without overloading on product. As Gocha explains, “One of the biggest mistakes with the beachy-haired look is to utilize products without understanding your hair type. For all hair types, you’ll want to avoid products that are sticky or that make your hair feel hard. Overdoing it on gel or spray can make hair appear stiff, and often, it doesn’t solve the issue of frizz. If your hair is prone to frizzing, use a serum; they are most easily absorbed into hair.”

· While hair is still wet, apply a volumizing spray; after all, the desired effect is a little bit of a boosted, “heavy-with-saltwater” wavy style that requires some volume. Kate Hudson’s look is the perfect mix between carefree and careful, deliberate face frames.

· Blow-dry with hands; don’t brush hair while styling.

· Choose random groups of strands and twist with fingers; particularly those around the face.

· Finish with hairspray if needed.

High Volume

With humid months around the corner, it’s helpful to have a few styles in the repertoire that lend themselves well to high volume. As Gocha puts it, “Why fight it when it’s humid outside? It’s a losing battle, unless you want to spend your day doing countless touch-ups, and who has time for that? I usually suggest going for trends that are low-maintenance and work well for women with thicker hair that changes texture in heat. Achieving a bigger look is simple, and contrary to popular belief, does not require a trip to the salon for a professional blowout!”

· If hair is thin, use a shampoo that specializes in producing volume.

· Use volumizing spray, and then flip hair until upside down. Blow-drying this way produces natural heft and allows closer access to roots that may need teasing. Like Beyonce, don’t straighten bangs, but blow dry them so that they keep the same texture.

· If needed, use a three inch curling iron (make sure all hair is dry first!) to add more control to waves.

· Not big enough? Tease hair at the crown. Then, using a large flat brush, comb out and seal with hairspray.

Short and Chic

There is no time more popular for short hair styles than spring and summer. And with more and more stars embracing the pixie cut, the moment to go short is now. “Not only are short hair styles the most low-maintenance and easiest to style, but they’re also increasing in popularity as more and more celebrities embrace them. It’s important with a short haircut to trust your stylist to give you the right look; this isn’t something that I would suggest trying at home. It takes a certain personality to pull off this trend, but it’s worth it to be on the cutting edge of what is chic,” explains Gocha.

· With short styles, keep in mind that they look best on women with square, oval or heart-shaped faces and hair with a certain degree of texture. Not curly, but wavy, is the best for short hair, though thin can also work if layered well. Not ready to go for the full pixie? Take a cue from celebrity Sienna Miller and keep hair longer in front.

· While many women think that a pixie cut is a “one-trick pony,” there are certain cuts that can be very versatile. For example, a short pixie cut can be styled into choppy bangs, a deep side part, spiked up for volume, or tousled.

· One of the best go-to products for any type of styling for a pixie cut is a wax-based product, which adds volume and also separation for sectioning hair. Use this as an alternative to hairsprays for keeping the style in place.

“Spring and summer are the prime seasons for women to be more confident in changing hair. I always suggest going for whatever look you’re considering, because it is hair, and it grows back! These easy styles are great for women-on-the-go who seek low-maintenance, yet trendy, looks. And isn’t that all of us, after all?” Gocha says.
