Stealing Beauty: Cosmetics Top List of Swiped Goods

Written By Melissa Dahl, Health Writer at msnbc.com

When magazine headlines shout "steal this look!" — some women are taking that literally.

Turns out, cosmetics top the nation's list of shoplifted items.

"Health and beauty care items" accounted for 20 percent of all items stolen from supermarkets in 2008, according to the most recent survey from the Food Marketing Institute.

Are vain people more likely to be criminals? Or do criminals just want to look hot in their mug shots?

More likely, it's that slipping beauty products into a purse is more doable — and worthwhile —than, say, ripping off a 12-pack of toilet paper.

Just last month, Caroline Giuliani — the 21-year-old daughter of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani — was caught swiping $100 worth of beauty products from a Manhattan Sephora . The Harvard senior must complete one day of community service to pay for her beauty-stealing binge. And although we don't know what Giuliani stole from the high-end beauty shop, experts say shoplifters are just as discerning as consumers when it comes to what they take.

"Consumers gravitate toward certain items, and so do the criminals," says Joseph LaRocca, a senior advisor for the National Retail Federation. Among the top shoplifted items are pricey hair care brands like Pureology and Bumble and Bumble, according to the group.

Also among the most stolen items: Oil of Olay's Regenerist line of anti-aging products, LaRocca says. "We hear that over and over again; it's one of the top targeted items," LaRocca says.

That's surely in part because of the attention the Regenerist line received after an American Consumer Union review of the drugstore line found that it outperformed much more expensive brands such as La Prairie Cellular, which sells a 1.7-oz. anti-aging cream for nearly $580.

Highly shoplifted items like the Oil of Olay skin care line are increasingly being stashed under locked display cases — an annoyance for the customer who must track down an employee to unlock the $24 wrinkle serum.

"Unfortunately, many of these theft deterrent tools are inconsistent with good customer service and a good shopping experience," says Lisa LaBruno, the vice president of loss prevention and legal affairs for the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

The padlocks may be making a dent, however. Bucking the economic downturn, overall shoplifting rates dipped in 2009; still, retailers still lost $11.7 billion from shoplifting last year.

Rhett Asher, the vice president of industry relations for the Food Marketing Institute, says the group is working on a report looking into why amateur shoplifters swipe what they do. In terms of beauty products — why pocket a $15 lip gloss and risk serious legal consequences?

"You have to look at it as a specifically self-destructive kind of behavior, a statement of rebellion — it's more about that kind of statement than it is about mascara," says Dr. Gail Saltz, a New York City psychiatrist and regular TODAY contributor. "I think that if you’re stealing stuff, then probably you aren’t happy and you may feel it’s about the way you look."

But for teen girls, pocketing nail polish from a drugstore can almost be a rite of passage — even actress Megan Fox went through a sticky-fingers phase as a teenager, and was reportedly banned from a Florida Wal-Mart after stealing a $7 tube of lip gloss. (Keep in mind that's according to tabloid reports, and Fox's reps have refused to comment on the claim.)

"For young girls, it often is these makeup items they're taking, because ... it's not about beauty — it's about doing something wrong," Saltz says.

Another theory: Maybe some petty thefts steal the stuff they're too embarrassed to bring to the register. Among the top shoplifted items according to the NRF are Alli weight loss drugs, pregnancy tests, Nicorette products — and Rogaine.

Vivoderm Review

Vivoderm is devoted to using the best natural ingredients from around the world to create the best skin care line available. They have found answers to a wide variety of skin problems in combining nature and science.

Their company was founded based on the work of holistic dermatologist Dr H. Adhami. Over the years, he repeatedly found that many of the challenging dermatological problems he encountered in his practice could be solved with natural and herbal treatments. For many years he searched for potent and safe botanical remedies from around the world and then fused his discoveries with scientific methods.

The Anti Aging Mask Kit ($85) is the best facial mask I've tried out in a long time. I like that it is 100% natural, herbal, and that it doesn't contain preservatives or chemicals. Personally, I wanted to try out the Anti Acne Mask ($85) at first, but I'm glad that I was sent this instead. I was a bit apprehensive before using it since my skin isn't dry. Therefore, I was a bit worried that I would break out since I haven't had the best of luck with anti aging facial masks in the past. Gladly, that wasn't the case at all! It makes my skin feel very smooth, soft, and hydrated without making it feel icky and / or greasy.

The Anti Aging Mask Kit comes with convenient porcelain mixing bowl and scoop. Mix 2 scoops (1 tablespoon) of mask powder with enough plain yogurt or Aloe Vera gel or water to make a paste. I prefer using water, but I might try other variations sometime. Apply to cleansed face and neck, leave for 10 minutes for dry, 15 minutes for normal and 20 minutes for oily skin. Remove with damp towel and rinse with cool water. Follow with Vivoderm Intense Moisturizer ($40.80) for dry skin or Zinc Repairing Facial Cream ($55) for normal to oily skin. It is recommended that you use this mask 2 to 3 times a week.

I also received the Foot Moisturizer ($36), because my feet get dry easily. Keeping them moisturized is one of the most pampering feelings in the world! This product has a soothing combination of Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, and Avocado Oil to make it a super moisturizing experience! Because it is extremely soothing and hydrating, it is also very effective for those who suffer from diabetes. Apply to feet and message. Use every day for best results. For added absorption, apply at night and cover with a sock to seal-in the healing effect.

Prabal Gurung Spring 2011 Collection: Hair by Odile Gilbert for Moroccanoil

The Designs:

For his Spring 2011 collection, award-winning designer Prabal Gurung embodies American sportswear in its purest form, redefined with a European edge. Sharp tailoring and restrained silhouettes are complemented by graphic prints and a bold color palette. The pieces are beautifully crafted with quiet strength and femininity, expressed through Gurung's signature attention to form, structure and detail.

The Hair:

Master runway stylist Odile Gilbert created elegant, long, “neo-chignons” inspired by the classic American ponytail. According to Gilbert, “Prabal Gurung envisioned hair that combined modern and classic elements yet was completely unique. This look embodies all of this and highlights a modern design softened by sculptural, rounded lines.” Part ponytail and part chignon, it’s pinned at the nape of the neck to hold its form, just as a chignon is. Each side of the look presents a different profile – one bold, simple and strong, the other soft and flowing. The hair itself is very sleek yet looks healthy and luminous. The final effect is very modern, and definitely very different.”

How To Create The Look:

Odile first applied the original Moroccanoil Treatment from roots to ends (using Moroccanoil Light for hair that was fine and blonde).

She combed or brushed (depending upon texture) the hair completely flat, created a deep part on the left side, pulled it back and sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to hold it in place while she continued styling. Next, the hair on the right side was released into a rounded shape, -- almost Twiggy-style, -- then sprayed with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray.

Hair on the left side was then pulled back into a ponytail with a thin hair band. Next, strands on the rounded right side were wrapped around the top of the ponytail, pinned, then released to blend and flow down the back.

After shaping the hair, Odile then clipped a rectangular silver-colored hair accessory to attach the length of hair to the nape of the neck and keep it from moving. She finished with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray to hold the look in place.

The final touch was a light misting of Moroccanoil® Glimmer Shine Spray all over the hair to give the look a long-lasting shine and to prevent static or frizz.

Moroccanoil products used to achieve the Prabal Gurung Spring 2011 collection’s runway hairstyles:

Moroccanoil® Treatment, a proprietary argan oil-infused formula, is exclusively designed to give hair a natural-looking silky, lustrous shine and a frizz- and static-free finish. It strengthens, conditions and revitalizes hair while significantly reducing drying time. (100ml / $40.80)

Moroccanoil® Light provides the same transformative benefits as the original Moroccanoil Treatment, but in a lighter consistency, specially formulated for fine and fair colored hair. (100ml / $40.80)

Moroccanoil® Glimmer Shine Spray creates an instant mist of long-lasting, incomparable shine while protecting hair from the damaging effects of UV light and free radicals. (100ml / $25.80)

Moroccanoil® Luminous Hairspray is argan oil-infused for lasting, healthy and natural-looking hold with shine. (330ml / $21.00)

Backstage Beauty with SEPHORA at NY Fashion Week

The artistry of the Sephora PRO Beauty Team shaped beauty trends during S/S 2011 New York Fashion Week by creating looks for Charlotte Ronson and assisting at EDUN and Dennis Basso. The sophisticated twists on the models’ natural beauty will be an easy beauty staple next season.

Charlotte Ronson, 9/11/2010, The Stage, Lincoln Center

Based on the ‘80s-inspired Charlotte Ronson collection, the makeup look reflected a mix of grunge, natural and organic, using little color on the face and emphasizing natural skin tones.

"We want to make it look like they did their own makeup for stomping around at Burning Man," explains Sephora PRO Beauty Lead artist, Gilbert Soliz. "By not covering their faces in color, we're using their flaws to our advantage."

To create the look, the Sephora PRO Beauty Team, led by Gilbert Soliz, used the following products:

· Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, $42 - This formula is lightweight, but subtly evens out skin tone to provide a natural, dewy complexion with a radiant glow.

· Make Up For Ever Sculpting Kit, $45 - This kit features complementary dark and light colors that blend with all skin tones to help define and contour the natural face structure. The result is an amplification of the entire look.

· Smashbox Bronze Lights Suntan Matte Bronzer, $28 - A silky, matte powder applied to cheeks to add warmth and a light sheen to complexion.

· Sephora Collection Professional Clear Natural Mascara, $10 - To give eyes a barely-there presence, a swipe of clear mascara was used to maintain this fresh look.

EDUN, 9/11/2010, Cue Art Foundation

The EDUN collection was based on organic looks and materials so the corresponding makeup was very natural. This look is accessible to all women and reflected the feeling of the collection.

“The collection was focused around unique and accessible styles, so we used this angle to create a makeup look that was really organic, monochromatic, very raw and effortless," explained Sephora PRO Team Lead, Gilbert Soliz.

To create the face, makeup artist Lisa Butler, supported by Gilbert Soliz and the Sephora PRO Beauty Team, used the following products:

· Make Up For Ever 5 Camouflage Cream Palette in No. 4, $36 - This range of lightweight, warm camouflage creams encouraged an even looking complexion.

· NARS Orgasm Illuminator, $29 - For a flush of color, this peachy pink luminous cream was used to contour facial structure in order to exude a fresh looking radiance.

· NARS Cream Blush in Cactus Flower, $26 - This sheer glaze was applied to lips to enhance their natural color and helped maintain the simplicity of entire look.

Dennis Basso, 9/14/2010, The Stage, Lincoln Center

The futuristic, youthful cut of the S/S 2011 Dennis Basso collection inspired a “wide-eyed pixie” makeup look defined by a clean complexion and flashes of color on eyes and lips.

“The goal was to create a very feminine yet defined eye with a pop of color. Combining bright blues and oranges with the bespoke application of false lashes, we were able to complete this sophisticated look,” says Jose Rivera, Sephora PRO Beauty Team Principal.

To create the face, Kabuki, supported by Jose Rivera and the entire Sephora PRO Beauty Team, used the following products:

· Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, $40, and Givenchy Mister Light Instant Light Corrective Pen, $32 – This combination created a flawless complexion by evening the skin and highlighting it for a clean, simple look.

· Sephora Collection Blush Me! Mono in Peche Tendre 04, $12 - Adding just a touch of this light sheer peach color to cheek accentuated the polished look.

· Sephora Collection Waterproof Smoky Cream Liner in The Deep End, Electric Teal and Rags to Riches, $10 each - These highly pigmented colors were the basis of the entire eye, creating a strong accent, and a different look on each model.

· Sephora Collection Colorful Mono Eyeshadow in Coffee Brown and City Fog, $12 each- These neutral toned eyeshadows were applied lightly to contour the eye and provide a contrast to the vibrant blue, teal and orange liners.

· Make Up For Ever Eyelashes - Individual, $15 - To create the ultimate lash for this look, segments of lashes were applied and curled before multiple applications of mascara. The result was dramatic and a modern twist on the classic Audrey Hepburn eye.

· Sephora Collection Nano Eyeliner in Golden Sand 07 - A golden-colored pencil liner was used to add gleam and pull the entire eye look together.

· Sephora Collection Colorful Artist Lipstick Palette, $36, and Sephora Collection Ultra-Shine Lip Gloss in Perfect Nude 20, $14 - This combination of light nude and rose lipstick was paired with a shiny neutral gloss to complete this sophisticated look.

Be on trend this Spring wearing the runway makeup looks seen at NYFS S/S 2011’s Charlotte Ronson, EDUN and Dennis Basso shows. All products are available at Sephora stores, by calling 1-877-Sephora or by logging onto Sephora.com.

Erin Fetherston Spring 2011 Collection: Hair by Odile Gilbert for Moroccanoil

Erin Fetherston's Spring 2011 collection is a celebration of wanderlust. Inspired by the woman who seeks the exotic and unique, Fetherston channels the passion of the tropics and the romance of the desert in a modern eclectic mix for spring. Traditional safari details inspire sharp feminine sportswear rendered in rich cotton twill and delicate eyelash lace. Pale cotton voiles, shimmering silk jacquards, and heathered linen combine to create chic day dresses and tailored separates. For evening, the Erin Fetherston woman emerges as a nocturnal bird of paradise in vibrantly hued variations on the designer’s cocktail signatures.

The Hair Look

“I wanted to create an exotic look that had the mood of a woman on a tropical holiday, ready to explore something new after a morning on the beach,” said hair stylist Odile Gilbert. “Her hair looks natural, healthy, straight and clean – but I’ve given it a bit of subtle drama, with texture only on the top of the hair and back from the face. The rest of the strands fall free. The texture was inspired by markings on tropical leaves. It’s relaxed yet sophisticated, perfect for a casual day or a dressed summer night.

How To Create Looks

Odile first blow-dried hair straight using argan-oil infused Moroccanoil Treatment or Moroccanoil Light (for fine or light colored hair) to protect and prepare the hair for smoothing with a flat iron.

After creating a deep side part, Odile lightly moistened top of hair from forehead back to crown and applied Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream and separated hair a bit with fingers. She then sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray only several inches away from the hair and further separated strands with a comb for a striated tropical effect. She then blow-dried the shaped texture, and sprayed a final light misting of Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray from a distance to hold the look.

To finish Odile brushed the rest of the hair, from back of crown to the ends, letting it fall naturally, then tucked the hair behind the ears.

Moroccanoil products used to achieve the Erin Fetherston Spring 2011 collection’s runway hairstyles:

Moroccanoil® Treatment, a proprietary argan oil-infused formula, is exclusively designed to give hair a natural-looking silky, lustrous shine and a frizz- and static-free finish. It strengthens, conditions and revitalizes hair while significantly reducing drying time. (100ml / $40.80)

Moroccanoil® Light provides the same transformative benefits as the original Moroccanoil Treatment, but in a lighter consistency, specially formulated for fine and fair colored hair. (100ml / $40.80)

Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream is a proprietary argan oil-infused formula that gives beautifully hydrating and natural-looking hold while eliminating frizz, and adding definition and shine. (300ml / $31.80)

Moroccanoil® Luminous Hairspray is argan oil-infused for lasting, healthy and natural-looking hold with shine. (330ml / $21.00)

Pantene Charitable Initiative: Healthy Hair for Healthy Water

The brand is proud to announce a charitable partnership with the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) program called Healthy Hair for Healthy Water, a collaboration that will help women and their world shine through healthier water. Through this campaign, Pantene will help CSDW reach its goal to ‘save a life every hour’ in the developing world by providing two billion liters of clean water every year by 2020.

Yesterday, Pantene celebrity ambassadors, supermodel Gisele Bündchen of Brazil, and singer/song writer Anggun of Indonesia announced the kick-off of the global Healthy Hair for Healthy Water campaign at P&G’s VIP reception the was held in conjunction with the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative in NYC.

The campaign will deliver clean, purified drinking water to needy areas via low-cost PUR packets, one of which quickly turns 10 liters of dirty, potentially deadly water into clean, drinkable water. Although CSDW is named after the children, Dr. Greg Allgood, Director, CSDW, says it is women who bring the program to life. “The true heroes of the CSDW program are women, as they provide 90% of all of the PUR packets.”

In the United Sates, consumers can make a difference now by purchasing Pantene products from the P&G eStore at http://www.pgestore.com/Pantene/pantene,default,sc.html. For each bottle purchased from the eStore through February 28, 2011, Pantene will donate 10 cents to CSDW, which is the cost of providing one week’s worth of clean drinking water (10 liters) for a child in the developing world.

“Pantene is committed to helping women and their world shine through health,” says Hanneke Faber, P&G’s Vice President & Brand Franchise Leader for Global Pantene. “As the Healthy Hair for Healthy Water program expands around the world, consumers will have the chance to simultaneously enhance the health of their hair and provide healthy water for women and their struggling families.”

“Mothers lose 1.8 million children every year from diarrheal diseases caused by contaminated water – more than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined,” says Dr. Greg Allgood, Director, CSDW. “Pantene’s commitment to improving the health of women and their children through its Healthy Hair for Healthy Water program is a means to help address this global health issue.”

Topol Plus Toothpaste Review

I recently received the Topol Plus Toothpaste ($4.49) and it does everything I look for in a toothpaste in a an affordable way. It freshens the breath, battles plaque, prevents cavities, and whitens the teeth! My teeth don't look bad, but I love to try products that will make my teeth look white and healthy looking. Not drinking soda has helped me out tremendously, but of course, teeth will still stain due to the food we eat on a daily basis. Thanks to Topol Plus Toothpaste, I now have something else to smile about!

Sky Ferreira: New Wave Obsession

When music sensation Sky Ferreira wanted a head-turning new look for her latest video, Obsession, she turned once again to her mane man, celebrity stylist Rob Talty of the Magnet Agency. “The idea was to wake up the natural movement of Sky’s incredible hair,” says Rob. “I wanted to perfect her waves, adding volume and a weightless airiness, while keeping waves under control.”

Here’s how Rob created Sky’s naturally tousled, textured waves:

« To prep hair for styling, I started with Neutrogena Triple Moisture Shampoo ($5.99) and Conditioner ($6.19 - $6.99). Next, I applied a mixture of equal amounts of the new René Furterer Vegetal Mousse and Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream ($28) to small sections of wet hair. The mousse adds volume and control as it hydrates, while the oil reduces frizz and boosts shine. Using a thick paddle brush detangles hair as it distributes product evenly.

« To bring out hair’s natural waves and add movement, I scrunched sections, and then diffused hair with a T3 Tourmaline Evolution Blow Dryer ($220) set on high heat, low airflow.

« Once hair was almost dry, I spritzed it with new René Furterer Finishing Spray and used a small Mason Pearson brush to finish drying the hair framing Sky’s face and around her part. A touch of Klorane Gentle dry shampoo with oat milk at the roots fluffs up hair and adds volume.

« Next, I finished the ends with a small, 3/4-inch curling iron, twisting the hair as it’s wrapped around the iron and directing it away from the face. Each section is released after a few seconds to achieve a soft, loose wave rather than an obvious curl.

« After finishing all ends, I had Sky shake her head, and then ran my hands through her waves. Last, a misting with L’Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray.

Megan Fox at the Toronto Film Festival

How to Get the Look

Megan Fox looked white-hot at the premiere of her new movie “Passion Play” at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival. She wore a sultry waved style created by celebrity stylist Creighton Bowman.

“We decided a soft, and effortlessly natural look was the way to go with her dress which was sexy and short, and I wanted to play up the beauty of her long, luxurious hair,” said Creighton.

“The styling became all about products that would keep the hair looking fresh all evening long. I started by applying Lisa Chiccine Thickening Volume Foam ($26), an alcohol-free styling mousse loaded with botanical extracts and certified organic ingredients, then towel-dried the hair from root to ends. I used it for this look because it’s really lightweight and gives a nice boost of natural-looking lift and volume.

Next, I did a loose, natural-looking blow dry and sprayed a light mist of Lisa Chiccine Hold Weightless Satin Hairspray ($26) all over her hair. I used Hold because it’s fast drying, flexible and gives an anti-static hold. It’s great for long hair that needs to move. Finally, I sectioned the hair and made random waves with a medium curling iron. To finish, I used a drop of Lisa Chiccine Shine ($38), a great anti-frizz serum by Lisa Chiccine that doesn’t weight hair down. It also has sun filters to help prevent sun damage.

Many women are wanting "lashes to die for", thanks to the popularity of Latisse. Peter Thomas Roth Lashes To Die For ($125) will dramatically improve your lashes within 3 months by adding natural length, thickness, and fullness. It does what Latisse will do at the fraction of the price and without a doctor's prescription. I started using this product in July. I didn't really notice much of a difference in my lashes, but it must have worked since my lashes appear much longer whenever I use my regular brand of mascara. I love that you can apply it just at night and not day and night like most eyelash conditioners. I've tried many eyelash conditioners before, and this one is one of my few favorites.

Key Ingredients and Benefits:

- Patent Pending PTR Lash Complex helps to dramatically enhance the appearance of natural lash length, thickness and fullness.
- Actiglide (Sodium Hyluronate and Hydrolized Glycosaminoglycans) moisturizes.
- Vitamins A, C & E protect, nourish and repair.
- Pro Vitamin B5 moisturizes, nourishes, repairs.
