Review: Splurge Skincare - Spoil Yourself Naturally

Splurge Skincare is dedicated to providing high quality products made from the finest natural and organic ingredients. When they couldn't find natural products that met their high expectations, they decided to create them ourselves. The result is a line of products that not only work, but make you feel good about what you are putting on your skin. So don't wait for a special occasion to indulge; splurge on yourself today!

The quality of their scrub is phenomenal! They tout the The Rub ($26) as being the best scrub you'll ever use, and I have to agree since the ingredients are completely natural. Sadly, not all scrubs out there are completely natural even if they say that they are. That's why it's important to read the labels!

The grains are very fine, which enables it to spread well without scratching or irritating the skin. I also like that the scrub isn't greasy in the least. It's currently available in three tantalizing scents (almond peppermint, and lemon), but I opted for the lemon since I love citrus scents - a great pick-me up in the morning!

I love having a good lip balm in my beauty arsenal. I hardly wear lipstick, unless I feel like getting really dolled up. Therefore, I couldn't resist the opportunity to try out their Lip Buttah in each flavor (lemon, orange chocolate, almond, and peppermint; $7 each). The texture is so creamy - not waxy, sticky, or drying at all! While each one gives my lips the TLC it craves for, the orange chocolate is my absolute favorite!

Review: Home Spa Collection - Dermatouch Natural Skin Care

Home Spa Collection offers an innovative collection of natural spa and high-end beauty products. This includes anti-aging skin care, best acne treatments, best anti-wrinkle creams, foot scrubs, paraben free skin care, and much more!

I've tried several acne treatments over the years and I can only name a few that has worked for me. This is why I was pleasantly surprised about how quickly the Dermatouch M.E.D. Exfoliation ($21.99), Dermatouch M.E.D. Night Recovery ($25.99), and Dermatouch M.E.D Cleanser ($21.99) worked for my troublesome skin. I'm still getting a pimple here and there, but nothing compared to what I was experiencing prior to my review experience. I was breaking out bad on my forehead, and applying foundation on it to conceal it wasn't doing much justice. These products made an embarrassing problem go away quickly. Therefore, each product is well worth the price! I've tried much cheaper products and I honestly never had any luck with the drugstore brands.

Pan Am Stewardess Costume Idea

Embody the glamour of a Pan Am stewardess this Halloween inspired by the new ABC drama series, PAN AM!

The iconic blue stewardess uniform and accessories -- which radiate a sexy, professional yet fun vibe – have become instantly coveted by the public due to the show's success.

·         Blue Suit with a Jacket and Skirt  – The “Pan Am Blue” is close to a Royal Blue. Suits can be found at your local thrift store. If you’re handy, you can tailor your jacket to make it fit your ladylike figure and shorten the sleeves.  Similarly, the skirt length is acceptable just to your knee.

·          White Collared Shirt -   Spread the collar over the lapel of the suit jacket.

·         White Gloves -  Gloves should reach the middle of your arm. Opera length gloves are too long.  In a pinch, use shorter gloves, not longer ones.

·         Nylon Hosiery -  In the ‘60s, hosiery was not as sheer as today.  Emphasize that you’re wearing hosiery by wearing a less-sheer style.

·         Short-Heeled Black Pumps - The stewardesses of Pan Am were on their feet all day, so find a sensible, lower heel.

·         Pan Am Wings Lapel Pin - A pattern is available for you to download here.  Simply print it out, cut it carefully and attach it to a piece of heavy paper or thin cardboard (like that of a milk carton).  Then, affix a safety pin to this and wear your wing on the left side of your jacket (over your heart).

·         Pan Am Stewardess Cap -  A pattern to create your own paper cap is available for download here.  There’s a pattern for the Pan Am cap pin provided as well.

·         Pan Am Flight Bag -  If you haven’t yet ordered your own bag, you can create your own by modifying a bowling bag or other similar large bag.

·         Hair is worn up in the style of the 1960s above the shoulders.

·          Make-up is light, “daytime” make-up.  Make it authentic by wearing the official shade, “Persian Melon” by Revlon (shade 585).

White Apricot's Green Grab Bag Review

White Apricot, a site known for their eco and socially conscious fashion, beauty, and lifestyle finds; recently introduced us to their new web-site, Green Grab Bag. For just $15 a month (shipping is FREE!), they'll send you travel size products of the best natural, organic and vegan skin and hair care, make up, fragrance, and much more!

For the month of October, we received a bevvy of cool samples. We weren't disappointed with them in the least.

Here's a sampling of some of the products that we received:

KESU by TSI-LA - this is a beautiful fragrance that can be used by a man or woman. I usually don't like warm and woodsy scents, but this one managed to capture my attention. It has notes of warm amber and precious rare woods, which are combined with smokey incense to give it a seductive and mysterious base. It's also layered with narcotic jasmine petals, davana, exotic spices, and fresh lime.

Vapour Beauty's Aura Multi-Use Blush in Spark - I was pleasantly surprised to get a full size product (a $28 value), because I love their products! However, I never tried out their blush until now. I like it much better than the blush that I was using, because this one looks more natural.

Holly Beth's Eye Cream - We have worked with this company in the past, but never reviewed any of their products before. I can't vouch on the effectiveness since I haven't used this eye cream for long, but I really like that it doesn't sting or burn like most eye creams do. It's a bit oily. Therefore, a little bit goes a long way if you want to avoid the oiliness.

Collective Wellbeing Corrective Cleanser in Oatmeal/Raspberry- I never heard of this company prior to this, but this is a really good cleanser! It provides soothing relief for irritable skin. My skin is very sensitive and breaks out easily. I've realized that not cleansers are good for my skin. Therefore, I have to be very careful about what I use on my face. So, it's a relief to find good products like this!

Scrubz Body Scrub in Citrus Burst - I'm shamelessly addicted to using body scrubs. Not all scrubs are the same, though. I have used really good ones, and I have used ones that weren't so good. Luckily, this one is really good! I received a good-sized sample of this product. I'm tempted to buy another once I run out. Not only it pampers my skin to perfection, but it also has a really beautiful fragrance. While the citrus is detectible, it smells more floral, which I really love!

Taylor Swift's Wonderstruck

In Taylor’s words, "wearing perfume is such a unique way to create memories. Like songs, a scent can take you back and allow you to relive a moment in time." Taken from a lyric in the song “Enchanted” on Taylor’s album, Speak Now, and adorned with some of her favorite charms, Wonderstruck will resonate with Taylor’s fans and beauty girls alike.

In this fragrance, a charming and sparkling surprise of vibrant fruits kisses a bouquet of soft petals and a touch of sweet indulgence.

A perfectly charmed deep purple bottle holds this enchanting fragrance. The iridescent rainbow finish, never before used in the fragrance industry, gives the bottle a magical glow. The Moravian star, dove, and birdcage charms that adorn the bottle were hand-picked by Taylor to evoke her unique style and whimsical flair.

Ease Stress with Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy, the natural stress relieving formula used by millions including celebs like Emma Watson, Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Aniston to stress-less and cope with life’s demands.

I'm the kind of person that doesn't like taking nerve medication when under stress or having a panic attack. I usually use Valerian Root or Passionflower supplements, but I also like to use other natural products to see how effective they are. Therefore, I jumped at the opportunity to review the Rescue Remedy when they contacted me about this line.

Rescue Remedy works almost instantly whenever I feel a bit stressed out. I've been feeling stressed out more than usual lately. Therefore, this came at a perfect time. I like that it's available in several convenient formats to fit within your busy day. I received the Spray, Gum in Elderflower (also available in Zesty Orange), and the Pastilles in Elderflower & Orange (also available in Black Currant). I preferred the gum and pastilles over the spray, because I like to have something to chew on whenever I'm feeling a little stressed or panicky. Salma Hayek Pinault recently mentioned in the September 2011 issue of InStyle Magazine that she loves to chew the Pastilles rather than gum or mints, because they help make her feel calm. She even gives them to her daughter (Valentina) on the plane.

A blend of 5 of the 38 Bach® Original Flower Remedies, RESCUE Remedy® is perfect for anyone with a "To Do" list. Keep Pastilles handy for the rush of your commute, Drops in your child's beverage before an exam, or Gum in your purse for that unexpected change in schedule.

You won't find anything but all natural ingredients in RESCUE Remedy®, so go on and Rescue your friends and family (including the four-legged kind!)

Pregnancy & Makeup: A Beautiful, Healthy You

When a woman first learns that she is pregnant, her considerations shift from everyday worries, to what in her life is about to quickly change. With those changes comes a unique set of challenges for the skin. For the duration of a pregnancy, and as hormone levels fluctuate, makeup becomes an issue to be addressed. Should the “tried-and-true”routine change as a woman develops in her pregnancy? When it comes to skin, celebrities like Beyonce and Hilary Duff seem to have tweaked their classic makeup looks to maximize the good and conceal the bad. Here, makeup expert Gail Sagel, President and CEO of FACES Beautiful and creator of the Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup, offers readers tips to rely on for keeping skin looking and feeling its best throughout a pregnancy.

Don’t Cover Up That Natural Glow

“As a mother myself, I know the toll that pregnancy can take on the body, particularly your skin. As a makeup artist, I know that makeup can be a very effective tool for enhancing your skin or covering up some hormonal boo boo. My biggest mantra is,let your natural beauty show for all to see. Don’t cover up that natural glow – unless you are over-glowing!” says Gail.

· If your skin seems its regular self, then your best bet is to use a sheer tinted moisturizer, with sun protection, just to keep your skin supple, while enhancing your skin tones. I especially like mineral makeup during pregnancy, since it’s so good for sensitive skin and during pregnancy – everything is more sensitive.

· If your skin has taken on a new dryness or flakiness then you’ll want to use a gentle creamy cleanser, exfoliate frequently and use a moist liquid foundation that will help keep your glow. A glow highlighter applied to your upper cheekbones will also give you a moist sheen, if you’re dry.

· If your skin has become oily, then it’s time to change to a foundation that is oil-free to help absorb your extra perspiration and moisture. Also, you may be getting extra redness from using products to help dry out the acne.So to counteract the redness, use a foundation, concealer or powder in a slightly more yellow tone than normal.

· Remember;during the day, whether you are using a moisturizer, a sheer tint, a foundation, or a powder – make sure your product offers protection from the sun. You may have issues with Melasma, which is common during pregnancy. Melasma is the appearance of brown patches on your face. But, protecting your skin from the sun will also protect you against developing real hyper-pigmentation,which won’t disappear post pregnancy.

Lather Up Lashes With Vaseline

Being incredibly warm and perspiring a lot is normal during pregnancy. For those pregnant women who seem to be sweating no matter where they are or what they are doing, waterproof products can be a solution to runny makeup. And, it is a quick fix. But, Gail does not recommend staying on waterproof products, as they tend to be more drying to your skin and not especially formulated for sensitive skin.

Gail explains, “All of a pregnant woman’s nutrients are leaving her body in an effort to create this new little body. So, it’s common for pregnant women to lose some of their eyelashes. Take a break from your everyday mascara and look for one that’s super hydrating – or lightly apply a little Vaseline to lashes for a great sheen and added moisture.”

· Smudging under the eyes is one of the biggest tell-tale signs that a woman is overheated, and perhaps should switch to a waterproof liner and mascara. Also, stick to powders rather than creamy facial products underneath the powder, as the look will appear cakey.

· If you feel naked without your concealer, make sure to choose a product that is light and breathable, and be careful to use a light application. Use a concealer brush to dab areas that are reddened or irritated.

· Because everyone’s hormones are different, you will either be dealing with drier or oilier skin. Adjust accordingly; exfoliate regularly in either case, moisturize to combat dryness, and phase oily products out of your regimen if you’re dealing with added oil.

Play Up Your Favorite Feature

“Pregnancy makeup isn’t all about hiding what’s wrong with your skin. It’s also about playing up those naturally beautiful features that are enhanced with pregnancy while still having fun with your makeup routine. Celebrities don’t change their overall look too much, and neither should you. I always play up at least one feature when applying makeup to pregnant women, and you should, too!” says Gail.

· Play up your lips: Go for a bold, fun moisturizing lip gloss with lip liner so that it won’t have to be maintained throughout the day. Right now, red lips are all the rage and will enhance the natural glow that pregnancy provides.

· Perhaps you’re suffering from unsightly Melasma, which commonly appears on the upper lip. Stick with a more neutral gloss or lipstick, and play up your peepers. Go for a bold smoky eye, or if that’s too involved, go with alight gold color and add flecks to the outer corners of your eyes. Keep your eyeliner simple and defined, and it will work for either day or night.

· If your skin is positively glowing, go simple on the lips and eyes. Use a light color on eyes, with limited liner, and use a lip gloss that is close to your own lip shade. Let your skin be the star!

Hairstyles Throughout the Ages - Celebrity Edition

Celebrities are walking examples of the hottest trends, styles and hairdos. In every age group, you find celebrities that set the standard for the perfect age appropriate look. They have you thinking: If only I had my own personal dream team, helping me create my latest look. How do you translate these looks and make them suit you? It’s not about imitation — but inspiration. The Pirri Brothers have created a celebrity-inspired guide to age appropriate hair dos and don’ts.

Experimental 20s

Some of the hottest celebrities in this age group, including Emma Stone and Blake Lively, share one trend — changing dos. This is the perfect age to experiment with colors, cuts and styles.

Be mindful of colors and cuts that fit the image you would like to portray for your career search/current career. Make sure your look fits you and can be styled fit your daily routine.

Flirty 30s

Whether you are a mom, single or recently married — you should still sport a youthful do. Opt for something sexy like long layered waves. Kim experimented with colors in her 20s — but now she is back to basic black. By now, you know what color suites you best. So, experiment with your cut. And, create fun and easy hairstyles like Kim’s recent bun for a youthful yet sophisticated look. Moms should aim for styles that will be easy to maintain and style.

You don’t have the hair you had in your 20s. Don’t over experiment with hair color shades.

Fun 40s

Signs of aging are knocking at your door. Don’t let newly-found wrinkles bring you down — refresh your look. Hair tricks can hide your problem areas. Layers and side bangs give you a fresh new look, covering any aging around the neck or signs of wrinkles on the forehead. Opt for hairstyles with movement for a youthful look like Jennifer Aniston. Be sure to condition your hair on a regular basis.

Don’t sport your mom’s old do. 40 is the new 30.

Fab 50s+ Do:

Once you hit 50, it’s all about looking natural. You don’t necessarily have to go short like Kris Jenner or Helen Mirren, but a short do at this age can leave you with healthier looking hair. Create a soft look with layers similar to Helen. Try layers under your hair for body, whether short or long. If you plan to have longer locks, try shoulder-length.

Don’t go too dark with your hair color. Going too dark will age your face. Also, don’t over style — keep it simple and classy.

A Spa Treatment That Will Go to Your Head

Getting to the root of the problem to relieve itchiness and flakes on your scalp has never been more luxurious or affordable. Because when you purchase their Hair and Scalp Therapy Shampoo with Green Tea and Neem ($12.95), you’ll get the conditioner with their compliments.

Why just wash your hair when you can bathe your scalp in a unique blend of essential oils and herbs? Hair and Scalp Therapy Shampoo is tough on flakes but will soften, purify and rejuvenate your hair and scalp -- without stripping your color.

Unlike a lot of chemical-based shampoos, Hair and Scalp Therapy Shampoo with Green Tea and Neem uses a blend of neem, tea tree, cedarwood, juniper, fir needle, thyme, ginger, organic herbs, green tea and a special coconut cleanser. That’s why this product is endorsed by the Safe Shopper's Bible.

In case you’re unfamiliar with neem, it is a remarkable ingredient, relied on for over 4,000 years. In India, the neem tree is known as the “village pharmacy” because of neem oil's natural antibacterial and antifungal qualities, which are especially valued in dealing with problems of the scalp.

And what better way to complete your therapy than with a complimentary bottle of Ecco Bella Hair and Scalp Therapy Green Tea and Neem Conditioner. This $12.95 value will provide the perfect finish to a spa-style hair and scalp treatment. Simply place the Shampoo in your online cart, and at checkout they’ll automatically add the Conditioner and then deduct its cost from your total.

Nail Trends for Your Age

Stay Classy, Nail Fanatics: Nail Trends for Your Age

We all know the basic dos and don’ts when it comes to fashion and makeup, but what about when it comes to nails? With the emergence of new and exciting nail art trends, there are a plethora of options available for enhancing your look with the help of one of beauty’s mainstays: a perfect manicure. But what trends work best for what age groups, and why? Nail expert and Creative Director of Pretty Woman USA, Aija Vilemsonne, gives us her take on what trends work for women of different age groups, and what trends are universal.

Black Nails

“In my experience, black nails on older women tend to make them look more dated. As we age, our hands begin to show signs before any other body part. With the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, and veins, black nails draw the eye to and highlight those small imperfections, that we might otherwise not have noticed,” says Aija.

· As an alternative, Aija suggests something a little less dramatic and a bit more subtle. For example, purple can be flattering at any age, as well as fun. Find the right hue that works for your skin tone, and work it throughout the seasons. Another on-trend color right now is blue. Go bright if you’re young, and if you’re older, try an understated hue like navy or a pale blue.

Textured Nails

Aija reveals, “I am a huge proponent of textured nails as a trend that can be worn at any stage in life. You can dress them up or down, and they can transition well from put-together at work to on-trend at night. Whether you’re a young girl experimenting for the first time with an at-home kit, or you’re a mature older woman heading to the salon for the latest in fashion, textures can be skewed for any age.”

· For younger women, textured nails can be an experiment: from glitter to designs, you can feel free to go a little crazy. However, for older women in the (some more conservative than others) workplace, a nail design shouldn’t be too distracting. Go for an animal print or cracked design, and stick with colors that work for your skin tone.

“When it comes to embellishment, be careful. From glitter to airbrushing, certain trends can work well for all ages. However, if applied incorrectly, rhinestones can make even a 25-year-old seem like her nails are too young for her. The key is not to over do it. The older you are, the more understated embellishment should be,”suggests Aija.

· Airbrushed patterns can be very attractive at any age, but stones, glitter, and stick-on objects can be considered “too young” – not to mention, most working women don’t have time for it. If you’re a more mature woman who loves her glitter, try a line of glitter at the tip of the nail, rather than covering your entire nail in the polish.

Aija touts,“Ladies, this is your fail safe; it’s a trend that we can all get behind. Neutrals are always in style, and lucky for us women, this universal look is very easy to wear. For this particular trend, you should be very aware of what colors work for your skin tone, so test them out. Nails should be a fun experience for everyone.”

· Notes on skin tone: Winter skin tones are generally pale, olive, or dark with blue or pink undertones, Spring complexions are pale with bluish or pink undertones,Autumn skin tones have golden undertones, and Summer complexions have golden undertones and peachy skin. The best neutrals for Winter skin tones are closest to the color of your skin, most flattering for Spring complexions are peachy neutrals, Autumn skin tones should go with a gold-tinged beige, and Summer complexions should opt for rose-colored nude.

Aija says, “The most important thing to keep in mind when sporting this season’s nail trends is that your nails should reflect you: the more mature you are in age, the more mature your nail style should be. But above all, nails should always be about expressing your own unique style – and finding what enhances your most flattering features.”

Jason Natural Products Quick Clean Makeup Remover Review

At JASON, they believe that it is equally important to pay attention to what you put on your body as well as what you put in your body. JASON Natural Products has been a leader in the natural personal care category since 1959 by creating everyday natural care for the entire body. They offer a wide range of products appropriate for the whole family including skin care, hair care, body care, oral care, and deodorants.

A good make-up remover is essential if you want a healthy, glowing complexion. Marsha and I recently had the opportunity to try out the Jason Natural Cosmetics - Quick Clean Make-Up Remover ($8.37). These pads are gentle and natural, making them ideal for all skin types. They effectively remove make-up and gunk within seconds. It's usually hard to find a good make-up remover that will remove even the toughest mascara effectively, but these get the job done! They give my face a slight, tingly sensation. However, they don't irritate my skin in the least. The Cucumber and Chamomile extracts give my face a soft and supple feeling without leaving a greasy residue. Each container comes with 75 pads, but it takes about 2 - 4 pads to get the job done, considering how small the pads are.

Oat Milk Poultice Recipe

Barbara Close, founder of Naturopathica, provided the ultimate remedy for irritated, dry skin. It's a less messier approach rather than filling the tub with oats.

Take 1/2 cup of oats and place them in a washcloth. Tie the ends of the washcloth with a rubber band and fill the sink with warm (not hot) water. Immerse the washcloth in the water and squeeze several times until the water turns milky. Splash this water onto clean skin, then apply the oat compress to moist skin, moving in small circles over face and body to gently exfoliate.

“Oats contain beta glucan, which calm inflammation and itchiness associated with dry, devitalized skin in winter,” says Close, a trained herbalist and naturopath.

Have a Pin-Up Girl Worthy Bust

Emjoi Micro-Pedi Review

The Ped-Egg has nothing on the Emjoi Micro-Pedi ($39.99 at Folica)! This innovative device takes the chore out of at-home pedicures by removing dry, rough, hardened, and callused skin from the soles of the feet in a matter of seconds. This home treatment is painless. You don't have to be concerned about nicks and cuts from metal scraper blades. You also don't have to have any hygiene concerns like you would with a pedicure at the spa. The finishing results are soft, supple, and beautiful feet. My feet haven't looked so good in years! This little device is a keeper. The only minor issue I have is that the least bit of pressure will cause the rollers make an odd, nerve-wrecking sound. Other than that, it does what it was designed to do......make your feet look good!

- Removes hardened, callused skin from feet in seconds
- Includes two different rollers for custom results: coarse (magenta), extra coarse (blue)
- Safe and effective alternative to metal scrapers
- Ergonomically designed handle for easy grip
- Portable and convenient
- Easy to clean under running water

The Grown-Up Girl's Guide to Braids

Ditch your usual go-to hairstyle and opt for a must-try trendy braid! A favorite among celebrities including Lauren Conrad and Jessica Alba, braids are the perfect hairstyle that can be worn for any occasion. Put a twist on the classic braid with these easy DIY styles from Paul Cucinello, Beauty Expert and Creative Director of the Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea:

The LC Braid

How to Get the Look: Smooth Oribe Crème for Style throughout dry or damp hair. Then, make a deep side-part and use the thicker side to create a French braid along your hairline. Tie the end, stick behind your ear and you’re ready to head out cute and carefree like Cali girl Lauren Conrad!

The Boho Braid

How to Get the Look: Work some Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray through dry hair to create fullness. Make a braid and secure with an elastic. Tug around the front and sides of your head to get the braid loose. Let any shorter pieces hang out to achieve Diane Kruger’s boho chic look.

The Elegant Braid

How to Get the Look: Start by French braiding along your hairline (on both sides to get the look from every angle). Gently tug at the top of your head to create texture and flow. Loosely tie or pin hair up in back. Use a working spray like Oribe Superfine Hair Spray to get the hold you need and the shine you want. This is an easy way to get a chic up do like Nicole Richie!

The Simple and Sweet Braid

How to Get the Look: To get Kate Hudson’s simple, straight-back braid, first use a lightweight thickening cream such as Living Proof Full before blow-drying. Tease your crown enough to get that extra lift and bump. Loosely tie your hair in a ponytail before braiding. This will help to keep the height of your bump. Braid your pony and secure the end with another elastic. To complete the look, use Oribe Superfine Strong Hair Spray to keep your pouf from falling.

The Mermaid Braid

How to Get the Look: For this look you should begin by choosing a hair product that works best for your hair type. If you have thick hair, a smoothing product like ECRU New York Silk Nectar Serum will work well. Otherwise, if your hair is thin and fine try working a volumizing product such as ECRU New York Volumizing Silk Mist through the bottom half of your hair. Make a part wherever you like and gather all of your hair over to one side. Hold the hair firmly to simply make a secure braid starting at the nape of your neck and tie the end. To complete the look and show off your braid make sure it rests over your shoulder just like Amanda Seyfried.

The Braided Headband

How to Get the Look: Now you can make your own headband…with your hair! Grab small sections of hair at the base of your part and braid them tightly. Tie the ends with a small elastic and stick them behind your ear. You can do one braid on each side of your part or give this look a twist with more than one like the woman in the picture above. When you’re finished, complete the look with a soft spray such as ECRU New York Sunlight Holding Spray!

Mom's Makeup Tips & Tricks - With Modern Flair

We’ve all heard the old adage, “Mother knows best.” From boyfriends to beauty, a mother seems to know everything – but is her advice always sound? When it comes to makeup tips that are passed down from one generation to the next, it’s necessary to do a little research to make sure that Mom’s advice is still relevant for current trends. Here, we ask makeup expert, Founder and President of FACES Beautiful, and creator of the Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup, Gail Sagel, to share with us some of her favorite motherly beauty tricks and give them a modern day twist.

Put Down the Tweezers

Most mothers warn their daughters when they attempt to sculpt their own eyebrows.Maybe it’s the whole loss of innocence; the moment when the little girl becomes a pre-pubescent and facial hair becomes an issue. “Leave such an important part of your face to the professionals,” my mother would say,and I believed her, even though I have a knack for tweezing. Gail lets us in on a little secret: “With a few tips, you can feel comfortable attacking your eyebrows, but Mom didn’t get it all wrong. You should consult a professional about the best eyebrow shape for you, let the expert help you achieve that look, and then maintain it.”

Gail’s Tips

· Once you’ve visited your professional, your only task should be to maintain your brows. Gail says that the biggest mistake she sees at the FACES Beautiful salon is when women over-pluck. To measure correctly, hold your finger parallel to the side of your nose. This is where your brow should begin. When you point your finger diagonally away from your nostril, toward the outside edge of your brow, you’ll find the correct end point.

· Pluck hairs in the direction that they grow, invest in a great pair of slanted tweezers, and give yourself lots of light. Go slowly and take breaks, making sure that you are not eliminating too much hair – bold brows are in!

Less is More

Mom always said, “With makeup, don’t overdo it. You’re beautiful naturally – let that shine through.” While natural looking makeup can be great for certain places, like the workplace or school, sometimes, you just need to go a little crazy and embrace your inner beauty nut. As Gail points out, “This isn’t bad advice, but makeup is about expressing yourself and playing up your best features. Having one key element that you accentuate is not only attractive, but trendy. Take heed of the good in Mom’s advice, and keep most of your makeup natural while choosing a dramatic lip or eye color; this update works with what’s in right now.”

Gail’s Tips

· Gail is a fan of choosing one feature to go bold with, particularly eyebrows, lips,or eyes. With lip color, it’s essential that you know your skin tone.Find a solid red that works for you. If you’re fair skinned, go for an orange-based red, if your skin is medium, berry-red or brown-red works, and if you have dark skin, stick with a red that has a blue base. This season, the red lip is the trend to embrace.

· To get the perfect pout, make sure that your lips are moisturized well prior to application. Use a lip pencil (in the closest color to your lipstick as possible) to create a frame and to prevent your color from bleeding onto the skin.

Match Your Eye Shadow to Your Outfit

I remember the day I went to school wearing lime green eye shadow to match my lime green top, back when I was first experimenting with makeup around age thirteen. My mother always told me to match my eye shadow to my clothes, and that morning I distinctly remember that she told me that I looked great – something tells me that was the mother in her, and not the beauty expert.“I’m all about whatever colors look best on you, and there are no real “rules” when it comes to eye shadow matching. What’s important to note is that even if a color matches your outfit, it will not necessarily look good on your eyes; it’s important to know what colors work best with your skin tone and to be aware of what doesn’t,”says Gail.

Gail’s Tips

· When it comes to eyeshadows, experiment! Try different shades to see what works best on your eyes, keeping in mind that skin tone has everything to do with it. Here’s a quick rundown of what colors work for common eye colors: blue eyes should stick with earth tones for maximum impact, green or hazel eyes should have fun with a purple or gold-flecked earth tone, and brown eyes are the winner in this game– they can get away with pretty much anything!

· For a universal tip that everyone can benefit from, use gold or white eye shadow on the inner corners of eyes to make them pop. Purple is also a great color to try for every eye hue; its place in the color spectrum makes it a flattering choice for any skin tone.

7 Hair DOS and DON’TS

1 – Keep it Simple: Opting for less is usually more, so skip the trendy crimped hair look and style a chic chignon or ponytail instead.

2 – Add Bling: If you want to accessorize your hair, use a sparkly hair clip for an ode to old Hollywood glamour.

3 – Skip a Day: Skipping a hair wash? Be sure to use Unite 7 Seconds Dry Shampoo ($17.99 at that is made with fine clay and can instantly remove excess oil, increase volume and refresh hair without the use of water or a trace of visible powder.

4 – Undone Waves:
Embrace your waves for an undone effortless style.

5 – Go for Natural Color: If you’re a natural brunette or a blonde, do enhance your color with highlights that are within 2 levels of your natural hue.

6 – Deep Treat: Once a week, apply a deep treatment to maintain healthy and shiny tresses.

7 – Bring a Photo: If you are trying to find a new style, bring along a photo to your stylist for inspiration.

1 – Smother Your Strands: Don't tie your hair back too tightly and never when it is wet. This stretches the hair shaft, causing it to break and split.

2 – Apply Too Much Product: Letting hair air dry before applying product will allow you to see where your hair really needs product, without overdoing it. Sometimes less is more!

3 – Be Afraid of Extensions:
Using extensions can give you a new look – without commitment Try Great Lengths Extensions – unlike other hair extension systems, the integrity of one's natural strands is never compromised, so the only risk one takes by having them applied is looking better than before.

4 – Forget to Protect: Going to be in the sun? Use a heat styling tool more than once a week? Spray Unite 7 Seconds Condition Leave-In Detangler ($18.99 at onto hair - this leave-in conditioner locks in color, detangles in 7 seconds, and offers both UV and thermal protection for all hair textures.

5 – Overdo Braids:
Keep your braid simple - opt for one loose fishtail braid or incorporate a loose side braid.

6 – Damage Your Hair: Visit your stylist every 4-8 weeks (depending on your hair texture – curlier locks can wait longer) to get a trim. Your hair style will look healthier and last longer.

7 – Follow Every Trend:
Work with your stylist to find a style that works just for you.
