Acquarella Review

Create a healthy nails while enjoying colors you love, with these non-toxic nail polishes for kids and adults. These natural nail polishes are water-based, non-toxic that are free of any harsh chemicals found in most solvent-based polishes. Designed to nourish and strengthen nails with repeated use, these nail polishes are non-yellowing, and requires no base or top coat.

Wicked by Acquarella ($15.95 at Nature's Basin) is one of the most gorgeous colors that I've tried in a natural nail polish. While being a hand model is most likely not in my future, I couldn't resist taking a photo to show you how beautiful this color is. Much as I had fallen in love with Scotch Naturals this past summer, I think I'm even more fond of this brand since the colors are more wildly vivid and richer. This nail polish has strong staying power, but it's easy to remove if you want to go "au natural" or try on a different color. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey.

Pros:
  • Doesn't chip easily.
  • Dries within seconds.
  • Completely odorless.
  • Comes in a variety of vivid to subtle colors. Other favorites include Vex, Mahalo, Star Spangled, Vamp, and Hot Chocolate.
  • Application is very smooth.
  • Doesn't include carmine (suitable for vegans).
  • Has one of the lowest ratings on EWG Skin Deep database.
  • Can remove easily with water for a brief moment after application.

Cons:
  • It's pricier than traditional nail polish.

Budgeting Beauty: How to Save on Essentials

When it comes to shaving our budgets, most ladies put beauty products in the "need" category. A study commissioned by Mintel validates this assumption, reporting consumers spent $2.32 billion on shampoo and $1.71 billion on conditioner in 2010 alone.

So what's the best way to save on essentials without resorting to dollar-store cosmetics? Here are nine tips to keep both your beauty and your budget intact.

Hair Products

Consider extending the life of your shampoo (and hair color) by using dry shampoo or baby powder in between washes.

Hand Soap

Foam hand soap is all the rage these days and one of the easier beauty products to DIY. Refer to EHow.com's recipe for specific instructions, but ultimately all you need is a lot of water, a bit of soap and a few drops of essential oil.

Makeup Brushes

In addition to extending the life on pricey makeup applicators, regularly cleaning your brushes is just the sanitary thing to do. And if you really need replacements, consider a tip given to me by a MAC Cosmetics artist; buy art brushes at craft stores for a fraction of the price!

Foundation

Whether you're a liquid, powder or mineral foundation girl, you can use less of this beauty staple by applying a base before application. The Magic Perfecting Base by L'Oreal is a favorite among top fashion magazines, and is available for less than $12 from Walmart and Target.

Fragrance

Let's be honest -- designer fragrances are among the most expensive beauty purchases, with $80 buying less than 6 ounces of product. If you can't part with your signature Chanel scent, buy gift cards at a discounted rate for retailers selling your fragrance and enjoy immediate savings.

Body Lotion

Moisturizing is a must for anyone who wants to avoid the shar pei-look at 50, but lotion gets pricey when you see the words "illuminating," "firming" or "age-defying" on the label. Unless you have a serious skin issue, consistent use of most drugstore moisturizers is sufficient.

Hair Color

Prolong your color-treated hair between salon visits using household ingredients. Brunettes can use a strong pot of cooled coffee and blonds can use a lemon juice-water mixture. Apply the treatment after shampooing, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse, condition and style as usual.

Hair Accessories

Today's trendy hair accessories can be homemade for a fraction of salon and department store prices. Channel your inner domestic goddess and create one-of-a-kind hair candy with beads, feathers and artificial flowers found in craft stores.

Less is More

There's no need to wear your entire cosmetics collection every day of the week. Consider giving your wallet a break by opting for the basics during mellow workdays or lazy weekends.

Clarins Instant Liner Review

I couldn't imagine myself being without a good liquid eye-liner since it's the staple product to almost every look of mine. Therefore, I have tried many! Sadly, I only have a few favorites since it's hard to find a good one. Luckily, the Clarins Instant Liner ($26) has become one of my new favorites. I generally apply it on in the mornings before taking my son to school. By the time the day is about over, it almost looks just as good as when I first applied it on! The soft, foam applicator enables you to create a smooth, uninterrupted line. Also, it dries rather quickly, which I find is a plus!

Mood Milk Review

Mood Milk offers artisan crafted bath & body products that are nutritious for body and mood. All products are handmade from some of the finest natural ingredients available including certified organic vegetable oils and aromatherapeutic essential oils.

The Mango Papaya Soap is delightfully sweet, cheerful, and fruity. Just the thing you'll need to get your day started on the right foot. It contains several ingredients that are skin-friendly: Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Jojoba Oil, Lemon Powder, and Organic Annatto Seed. The soap is highly moisturizing. Great for those who have dry and/or sensitive skin!

The Jasmine Ylang-Ylang Body Oil ($15) has sophisticated notes of Ylang-Ylang and Jasmine. Both fragrances harmonize well together, creating a beautiful and unique scent that I find captivating. Most importantly, it makes my skin feel super soft and luxurious. Like most body oils, it's a tad greasy at first, but the skin drinks it up. Perfect for the cold weather when the skin is the most vulnerable. There isn't an ingredient in this body oil that's harmful for the skin since it contains Grape Seed Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, and Natural Essential Oils.

The Rose & Jasmine Lotion ($10.50) is a light and silky lotion that softens and nourishes the skin, while giving off a beautifully delicate fragrance of rose and jasmine. The key ingredients are Water, Sweet Almond Oil, Stearic Acid, Organic Shea Butter, Avocado Oil, Vitamin E, Glycerin, Grapefruit Seed Extract, and Natural Essential Oils.

Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette Review

The Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palettes enable you to create endless combinations of looks from natural to dramatic in 6 new eye shadow quads. The unique mineral formula can be applied wet or dry for more intensity and lasting hold. Each quad comes with 1 highlighter shade, 1 contour shade, 2 base shades, and an application guide for tips on how to design your perfect eye.

It had been ages since I donned smokey eyes until I recently tried out the Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in 07 Smokey Passion ($40). The colors are soft, fully pigmented, and blend harmoniously well together with lasting adherence. While the price may be a tad expensive, it's worth the splurge if quality is what you're looking for. The darkest shade (my favorite) in this quad looks black in the picture above, but it looks more of a deep, deep chocolate brown in person. This quad is perfect for the Fall smokey look!

At-Home Hair Coloring Tips

If you’re an at-home hair color virgin, do not attempt before reading these must-know tips from Paul Cucinello, Beauty Expert and Creative Director of the Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea!

Rich Chocolate Brown

AKA The Katie Holmes, a rich brown always calls for a semi-permanent color in a neutral tone. Permanent colors tend to pull too much red because the peroxide in the product brings out the natural warmth in your hair. I suggest trying L’Oreal Healthy Look Crème Gloss Color.

Pro Tip: After applying the color to your roots be sure to refresh your ends. To richen up faded color without over processing (or achieving a darker result than desired) pick up an extra box of color and mix the included deep conditioning treatment into the color and developer mixture. This will dilute the color so it stays sheer and deposits just enough to refine the tone. Apply it to the ends and leave it on for up to ten minutes.

Blonde Bombshell

Blondes can be tricky because most at-home hair colors yield a much more golden result than people are looking for. Don't choose a shade that's too far from your natural color and remember that the color on your roots should be slightly deeper than the ends like Jessica Simpson. Select an ash shade if you want a more neutral result. Unless your natural color is VERY pale, avoid anything that is labeled “Golden” ...chances are you will wind up unhappy.

Pro Tip: Is your blonde feeling "blah"? Brighten up your color with an at home brightening product. It's a great way to kick your color up a notch without frying your ends. It can also soften the look of re-growth. Try John Frieda Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray.

Sun Kissed Blonde

Although I rarely suggest attempting highlights at home, even adding a streak here or there can sometimes be the difference between a costly trip to the salon or a great night out! Using a tail comb, try carefully selecting a few pieces around your hairline that are no thicker than a half of a centimeter. To get a highlighted look like Hilary Duff, place the hair in foil and paint your highlighting color on each piece until they are thoroughly saturated. Try using L'Oreal Couleur Experte 8.2 in Iced Meringue.

Pro Tip: Be sure to keep checking your highlights to make sure they get light enough. Here's where most people make mistakes: You can always tone highlights down if they get too light, but if a highlight isn't light enough after you rinse, unfortunately the only way to correct it will be to re-color each piece again.

Dark & Mysterious Black

Kim Kardashian amps up the sex appeal with her signature black mane. It's super shiny and mysterious. This shade is easily achieved on hair that's already dark, so very gentle color should be used to ensure that it doesn't wind up looking like shoe polish. You can select any shade from “dark brown” to “blue black” depending on your skin tone. Try Revlon Colorsilk in Soft Black.

Pro Tip: If you choose to dye your hair black, know this: it's a long road back so make sure you're ready for a long term commitment. I'm a big fan of using gloss to try color on first and then when you're ready for a major commitment and want to bump up the intensity switch to a semi- permanent color.

Flaming Hot Red

Nothing looks worse than a really fake red. Stick with colors that can occur in nature, just like Adele or Florence Welch. Choose natural reds that are more golden or copper (avoid cool, cherry tones). Reds should also be somewhat uniform, so don't be tempted to try adding highlights to a rich red base. If you're a blonde and you want to try copper hues, use a semi-permanent color in strawberry blonde. I suggest trying Couture Color Luxeblend Créme Color in Strawberry Blonde.

Pro Tip: If your hair is naturally dark and you want to achieve a soft, coppery shade, try using a golden blonde permanent color instead of an actual red. The result will be warm and coppery without looking too artificial.

Also, be sure to protect your skin while coloring your hair at-home. Grab your favorite moisturizer and apply a generous amount to your hairline, the tips of your ears and the nape of your neck to avoid staining.

Moody Bee Beeswax Lip Balm Review

Randy and Krista Moody live in Kimberley, B.C., a small mountain town nestled between the Rocky and Purcell Mountains. A few hives are kept at their home but most are kept on wild land in the local area.

Randy Moody started his beekeeping hobby with 2 hives in 1998. He has a passion for nature and the environment, and is committed to the production of pure and natural honey. One summer while Krista was helping Randy with honey extraction, she looked at the leftover beeswax, and had an idea. In her lifetime she had bought and used copious amounts of lip balm, and she was determined to make a beeswax lip balm that would be better than anything she had tried. After years of intense research and experimentation her goal was achieved. You will love Moody Bees Beeswax Lip Balm ($5.45)!

Considering that this lip balm is made with beeswax, I thought it would be waxy or sticky. This is what turned me off with Burt's Bees, but this isn't the case at all with Moody Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. It's really moisturizing, smooth, and soothing for dry, chapped lips. The Peppermint makes your lips slightly tingly, but the Vanilla balances it out nicely. It doesn't stay on after eating or drinking, but that's just a small issue since most lip products are like that. Excellent product at a great price!

Heal Tired Legs

High heels are proof that beauty is pain. Women constantly wear uncomfortable (but gorgeous) shoes despite the damage they cause to their feet and legs. Fortunately, with the help of Cures by Avance women can now lessen the effect that wearing heels can have on their legs with this dynamic duo:

I love using the Muscular Ease Massage Oil ($35), because it gives my legs the TLC that it needs after a vigorous workout or general over-exertion. Even though it's a massage, it's not greasy in the least. The smell is divine! It stimulates circulation and eliminates excess fluid, while pains and aches dissipate. The key ingredients are Massage Oil, Juniper, Rosemary, Melissa, and Lavender Oils; all contribute to melting away tension deep within muscle tissue.

You might also want to check out their Anti-Stress Massage Oil ($35), which is good for acne, tension, nervousness, and irritability. Their Energizing Massage Oil ($35) is good for fatigue, nasal congestion, and lack of mental alertness. And, the Massage Oil ($30) is ideal for all skin conditions.

The Stress Relief Sea Bath ($11 - $30) is the ultimate stress reliever after a long and hectic day. Not only it will reduce stress in your legs, but it will banish stress in other areas of your body, while relieving muscle tightness. It's made with a fusion of seaweed, petitgrain, basil, sesame, lavender, sage, and chamomile essences. Simply add one teaspoon into the water and soak for 20 minutes. I feel like I'm at the spa whenever I use this product. It feels that pampering!

You might also want to check out their Stimulating Soak ($11 - $30), which is good for fluid retention, poor circulation, and fatigue.

Clarins Eye Definition Mascara Review

The Instant Definition Mascara ($24) is a new, ultra-volume mascara with a rich formula and revolutionary brush that enhances each individual lash for ultimate definition. The key ingredients are Seaweed Extracts to protect, repair, and strengthen lashes. Glycoproteins thicken lashes and adhere for long wear.

It has been a good while since I've discovered a mascara that I've been enamored with. I had been sticking to drugstore brands for the last few months to save money, even though I wasn't totally in love with anything that I was using. I honestly don't think I've ever tried anything else from Clarins before, but I'm eager to foray into the brand a little bit more after trying out this mascara. I love that this mascara doesn't wear off easily, unlike most of the brands I've come across lately. It also doesn't smudge or flake. I wouldn't recommend it if it did, because I know shelling out $24 for mascara is not everyone's idea of a bargain beauty product. Overall, I think it's high time for me to ditch those other mascaras that I have.

Clarins Celebrity Make-Up Artist, Pati Dubroff, has been testing the Instant Definition Mascara ($24) and it has already become a staple in her kit. Tips below from Pati on how to use this new mascara.

1. Apply the Instant Definition Mascara before applying your other eye make-up. Doing it at this point allows you to get close to the base of the lash and if some mascara gets on the lid, it's easy to remove without messing up the eye make-up.

2. Once it dries, apply eye make-up (such as liner and/or eye shadow).

3. Then apply a top coat of the Instant Definition Mascara, keeping the brush horizontal to build volume on the center lashes.

4. Next, carefully wipe the brush with a clean tissue to focus on the smaller and lower lashes to remove any excess mascara and avoid clumping.

5. Hold the brush vertically and carefully cover the inner and lower lashes - the key is a light dusting, not a clumpy heavy coat.

6. The smaller bristles on the tip of the Instant Definition Mascara brush are perfect to work through clumps; treat it like a comb!

Makeup to Make a Glowing First Impression

When you’re young, the world is your oyster. From the first days of school to first days on the job, to first dates with that special someone, life is peppered with new and exciting encounters, where the first impression means just about everything. Rather than crumble under the pressure, it’s important to stay poised and confident, and to be satisfied with your overall appearance – because, after all, that’s your first chance to make your mark. These big moments can be stressful, so we’ve asked Gail Sagel, Makeup Artist, President, and CEO of FACES Beautiful and creator of the Brush-On Liquid Mineral Makeup, to give us some beauty tips that can make life’s important first impressions just a little bit easier to handle.

First Day at School

· Here, the most important thing to remember is: don’t overdo it. You want to enhance your natural features, but still look like you. If you’re still tan from the summertime, apply a sheer tinted moisturizer and skip the foundation.

· A little color never hurt anyone. Add some blush or bronzer to spots that are fading, apply to the tops of the apples of your cheeks. A good trick for teens is to smile and apply blush – this helps you to focus on the right area of your face.

· Stick with a neutral colored eyeshadow for a classic day look. If you’re an eyeliner girl, make the liner thin; don’t go too thick or heavy. Save your dramatic eye looks for weekends and parties.

· Add a couple coats of mascara. Go with a pinkish or nude lip gloss that is close to your normal lip color.

· The most important thing is to feel confident and happy about the makeup you’re wearing, and not to hide underneath it. Highlight your beauty by keeping it simple and neat.

First Day at Work

· The hard part is over: you’ve got the job. But sometimes, the first day of work is even more stressful than the interview. Take a look around and observe the traditional makeup look of the workplace: it looks natural, but it’s not.

· Go with light-weight coverage, a tinted moisturizer or foundation, using just as little as possible on the face. Use concealer to hide any blemishes, and choose a blush color that complements your skin tone. Mimic your natural flush shade for a flattering choice that is not overpowering.

· A matte lip color, either a lipstick or lip stain, is the most appropriate option. Gloss can be distracting and needs to be reapplied regularly.

· Eye shadows in tan, brown, and cream that blend with your skin tone is the best bet for the workplace. A little shimmer is fine, as long as it’s not extreme.

· A thin line of eyeliner and mascara should be sufficient. A little extra eyeliner that is done neatly is certainly acceptable, but skip the drama of a liquid liner. You want to be able to focus on your daily tasks, and not have to worry about reapplying your makeup.

First Date

· First dates are all about expressing yourself. When in doubt, use the less is more approach; don’t overcompensate for mistakes with more makeup.

· Use a concealer for blemishes, a bit of foundation to blend skin tone, and powder if needed. Go for a natural blush color at the tops of the apples of your cheeks. Dab some white eye shadow into the corner of your eye; this will make your eyes pop.

· Pick one area of your face to go a little crazy. The eyes are always a good choice here. Whether you choose a smoky look, using neutral browns to blend a sultry shade, or a light, sparkly, creamy shadow, both options are flattering and fun.

· Use a few coats of mascara and your favorite eyeliner, liquid or pencil, to create a dramatic look. Keep lips simple with a soft nude gloss. If you go with a bolder lip, tone down the eyes so that one area of your face really draws the attention.

· Don’t overdo makeup in multiple areas. You want to look like you, just a little bit fancier. Have fun with your look, and use it to demonstrate your personality by showcasing your best features.
