Hairstyling Heavyweight Irina Bilka Crowned Sebastian Professional's What's Next Awards Grand Prize Winner

Sebastian Professional invited What’s Next Awards grand prizer winner, Irina Bilka, to Fall ’11 New York Fashion Week where she tore it up backstage with her finely honed sense of style and razor sharp ability to execute. Bilka, of Clearwater, Florida’s Salon Lofts, crafted fearless hair fashion backstage at Alice + Olivia Fall ’11 fashion show where playful chignons took center stage. A novice to New York, but a veteran to the runway, Bilka was in her element!

Here’s what she had to say about her favorite products, her experience at fashion week, and what she hopes to accomplish with her style savvy ways.

Q: What are your favorite hairstyling products?

I love Re-Shaper because its hold is so flexible you can re-do any style over and over again to achieve the desired outcome. I also make sure to keep Shaper Fierce on hand because of its maximum hold. And for a finishing touch with added sheen, I love Trilliant!

Q: What was your favorite part of working at Fashion Week?

Hanging out with the Sebastian Professional Design Team was an incredible experience! Such a talented, fun group. And styling next to Thomas Dunkin, Lead Stylist Design Team Member, was absolutely amazing!

Q: What is your ultimate career goal?

I hope to be a freelance international editorial stylist working with major high fashion magazines. And I want to open my own salon!

How to Videos: Mila Kunis and Oscar Winner Melissa Leo's Oscars Hair

Celeb stylist Creighton Bowman recreated Mila Kunis’ glam 30s finger waves and the soft updo he created on Oscar-winner Melissa Leo for last night’s red carpet.

Mila Kunis

Melissa Leo

And Creighton’s breakdown on how he achieved Melissa’s look:

The initial idea for Melissa Leo’s Oscars hairstyle was to create something effortless and carefree à La Dolce Vita, but the look also needed to be about the silhouette: I developed a style that would complement the dramatic collar of her dress and elongate the line of her body.

I started out by applying Leonor Greyl Lait Luminescence Bi-Phase Detangling Milk and Condition Naturelle Heat Protecting Styling Spray to Melissa’s towel-dried hair. I used Gel à La Kératine, an alcohol-free styling gel, on her hairline to hold all of the tiny, curly strands in place.

Then, I blow-dried her hair with a medium-sized round brush so it wouldn’t be completely straight: I wanted a little curl at the ends. One of the best things about doing a round-brush blow-dry is that it enables you to lock in shine even if you are creating a rough, modern texture.

After drying, I worked a few drops of Serum de Soie Sublimateur, a silicone-free anti-frizz serum, through Melissa’s hair; created a section from ear to ear across the back of her head; and pulled the section up into a high, tight ponytail. Then, I loosely incorporated the sides and top of the hair into the ponytail to achieve softness while maintaining tightness at the nape of her neck. It was very important to keep it tight in the back to avoid interfering with the collar of Melissa’s dress.

I wrapped the pieces into a high chignon and secured everything with Voluforme setting and styling spray. Before the red carpet, Melissa and I had a bet going about her hair: she said she would let me do an updo if I could achieve the whole look with four hairpins or less. I like to call it “The Four Hairpin Challenge.” I knew that I could definitely do that with Leonor Greyl products!

After a little backcombing at the crown of Melissa’s head, the final step was to tease out the pieces in the front. My method to create that sort of effortlessness is to pull everything back and let whatever falls out fall out. If you force strands out to frame the face, it looks too specific, but if you let them fall out naturally, it produces a very soft effect.

Simply Organic Beauty Review

Simply Organic was founded in 2001 by professional beauty industry visionary Gene Martignetti. After watching his five-year-old son battle childhood Leukemia, while also dealing with health issues of his own, Martignetti became inspired to create a company committed to one simple principle:

“In the pursuit of health and beauty, what you put on your hair and skin is as important as what you put in your mouth.”

While researching tirelessly to help his sick child, Gene came across information on the harmful effects of synthetic ingredients found in many of the top salon and spa brands used today. What he learned motivated him to create an alternative line of products that used only natural, organic ingredients but resulted in great-looking, healthy hair and skin. That company is Simply Organic.

Renew and re-hydrate with olive leaf extract, organic honey and nature’s essential oils. The Moisture Rich Shampoo ($28) won the Natural Solutions - Beauty with a Conscience Award in 2008, which hardly comes to no surprise since it is very gentle and effective on my hair. It's a bit hard for me the find a shampoo that's right for my hair, even if it is organic and/or the best shampoo on the market. Therefore, I am very pleased that this one doesn't strip my hair of it's natural oil and making it drier than the Sahara Desert in the process. The smell is a great pick-me-up in the morning since it has a fresh lemon scent.

The Moisture Rich Conditioner ($30) is the icing on the cake since it locks in moisture, which is really beneficial for dry and damaged hair. While it is a tad expensive, it's truly worth the price if you're looking for a high quality organic conditioner. Most shampoos and conditioners that are "budget-friendly" are swimming with chemical "muck", which can be really harsh on your hair. Plus, they have a potential to cause health problems ranging from allergies to cancer.

Halle Berry Reveal Perfume Review

Halle Berry recently launched her third fragrance, Reveal by Halle Berry ($12.50 - $35). It's the perfect balance of timeless sophistication and easy elegance. Reveal is truly reminiscent of what it means to be naturally glamorous - an intriguing blend of confidence, charisma, realness with a hint of mystery.

This voluptuous fragrance is composed with top notes if Mimosa Flower, Juicy Peach, Honey Dew Melon, and Red Berries; middle notes of Iris Blossom, Plumeria Flower, and Neroli Petals; and base notes of Vetiver, Cashmere Woods, and Skin Musk. I honestly haven't smelled a fragrance this beautiful in a long time. I'm not fond of scents that are too earthy or heavier and I like that this isn't the case at all with this perfume. It's perfect for me since it is light, yet delightfully intoxicating at the same time. I love how it lingers on throughout the day without pulling a disappearing act. It's the scent that I choose first whenever I go out on a date. The Iris is the special part of the composition of this perfume, which can be a bit dark or woody. However, Halle chose facets of it to make feel velvety soft and airy.

The Reveal bottle design is an exquisite vintage-esque bottle with a contemporary twist. Taking inspiration from the art deco era and Halle's fond memories of a beloved object d'art, the flacon is curvaceously shaped like a four-sided teardrop, with ridges that make it beautifully tactile, The heavy glass is transparent to let the light golden juice inside shine through, and is topped with a jewel-like cut cap.

Inspired by the desire to enhance her eyes both on and off camera, a Japanese TV personality created FAIRYDROPS, a mascara that features a unique wand and luxurious formula that work together to create dramatic, doll-like effects. Now one of Japan's bestselling mascaras with a beyond-loyal following, FAIRYDROPS' conditioning ingredients, colorful packaging, and unique, patented wand are now available in the United States — exclusively at Sephora. Whether using this winning formula on or off camera, this dreamy brand will create a lasting impression.

Scandal Queen Mascara $24

This do-it-all mascara is blended with fiber to give you lush, doll-like lashes. The unique brush catches even the tiniest lashes, defines, lengthens, and provides all-day curl.

The People Are Talking:

I'm in love with this mascara. My lashes are long in moderately thick. This mascara is just crazy. I honestly have had friends ask if I was wearing false eyelashes. I haven't had a problem with flakes, smudges or raccoon eyes. It stays on, yet removes easily. - odessa60

This is my new favorite mascara, it really does give you doll like lashes! Amazing curl and length as promised. The wand's shape is really interesting and catches even the tiniest farthest out lashes.

This has replaced DiorShow and UltraFlesh as my top favorite mascara currently. Plus is it really easily removed which for me is a big deal maker. The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars was I was hoping for a bit more volume as well, but this mascara is just such a gem. I adore it so much, would love to see it in a dark navy.

Another plus is, my lashes remained soft, didn't get that brittle feeling and no flaking.
- piratefly

There has been a lot of hype about this mascara. I am usually wary and don't believe everything I read. I asked a make-up artist that I know and she said it was one of the best she ever tried. She was a loyal Dior Show fan before switching to Scandal Queen. So, I bought a tube. When I first saw the brush, I wasn't sure what to think. Bottom line - it really does make your lashes longer and thicker. I did not notice any curling properties, but my lashes were thicker and longer. They were also soft and very natural looking. I really like this mascara!

Inspired by Hollywood's casually cool h.wood Tea Room, is an eclectic line of cosmetics. Like the aromatic teas brewed from nature's finest organic tea leaves, uses only the purest of ingredients combined with healing essential oils. A holistic tea-inspired beauty line. Only in L.A., and now brings chic boulevard gorgeousness to the everyday woman.

Besides her lips, Angelina Jolie made the matte nude look highly-coveted in the beauty world. Using a matte lipstick can be a bit tricky. However, nude mattes are a bit trickier since they can look overly dry. Thankfully, has a line of Nude Matte Lipsticks with Moisture.

The Nude Lipstick in Topanga ($20) can be layered, worn alone, worn with their European beach-inspired lip liners, or with your favorite lip gloss for a more beautiful and sexier look. I love how well this color compliments my skin tone. It is a beautiful and intense shade of deep mauve nude. The flavor is also yummy - yes flavor (a hint of warm vanilla caramel)! Plus, it is well moisturizing, glides on smoothly, and dries to a beautiful matte finish without over-drying or flaking.

You can also buy the Nude Lipstick in Malibu (deep rosy nude), Zuma (mauve nude), Newport (rosy nude), Laguna (light nude), and Venice (coral nude).

Their Eye Shadows ($16) in Beverly, Melrose, and Cahuenga are highly pigmented, long-lasting, and feel soft as a Cashmere sweater! You can wear them alone or mix and match them with other eyeshadows to create a fun combination. I've already mixed the Beverly eyeshadow with my favorite bright green mineral eyeshadow and came up with beautiful results (pale green with a hint of gold)! I don't do swatch reviews, but you can trust me on this one since I am eyeshadow fan and will not steer you in the wrong direction - their eyeshadows rock! I wouldn't mind trying out their other colors such as: Fairfax, Doheny, Olympic, Robertson, Pico, Rodeo, Highland, Mulholland, and Wilshire.

Their Lip Gloss ($16) in Vegas is a beautiful shade of shimmering gold without the gaudiness. Besides being well moisturizing, it has the right amount of shine and shimmer without being sticky in the least. Great alone or paired with any lip stick. This ultra-moisturizing vanilla-caramel flavored lip gloss is also available in Cabo, Maui, and Napa.

Their Mineral Powder Foundation ($28) in Fair is normally the shade I'd use with most brands, but theirs was a bit lighter than I expected it to be. I have to use a tiny, tiny amount along with an organic liquid foundation that I use so I won't look ghostly. It includes good-for-your-skin ingredients: Green Tea Extract, Lavender, Sandalwood, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Rosemary, Sage, Cedarwood, Palmarosa to help promote healthy skin. I do like how smoothly it goes on, but I'll remember to order a shade darker next time!

I'm normally not a fan of cream blush, but their Cream Blush in Azalea ($22) is the best cream blush I've used so far! I even like it better than the Tarte Natural Beauty Cheek Stain that I normally use, which I've grown increasingly disenchanted with since the staying power is far from being strong! This weightless blush gives cheeks a sheer, velvety, and matte finish. It flawlessly blends into the skin, making it appear more natural. . Wear on the cheeks for a clean wash of sheer color, or apply to lips for a quick fix. Their Cream Blush is also available in Snapdragon and Marigold.

Their Illuminate Shimmer ($22)
gives the perfect amount of all-over shimmer without you looking like you took a walk on the wild side on the Las Vegas Strip. It's also a great way to accent, contour and highlight the eyes, cheeks and body with flawless sheen. Their Illuminate Shimmer is available in Sunshine or Moonlight - your choice!

Sugared Body Polish, $22:
This body scrub is highly addictive, indulgent, and the results make it well worth the price. I like that it isn't messy (slippery or too oily) in the least. It makes the skin feel soft, moisturized, and well pampered!

Body Souffle, $22:
This body souffle has a subtle and pleasant fragrance that blends well with just about any perfume that you're wearing. It has an incredibly smooth, rich, luxurious texture. I like how well it moisturizes the skin without leaving an icky, greasy feeling behind.

Foaming Body & Hand Wash, $20:
This body and hand wash is thicker than most of the body washes I've used in the past. I like that it doesn't dry out my skin like some I have used in the past. While the scent from this body wash doesn't last long after you've taken your shower, it's great to use the body scrub and/or body souffle to make the scent last.

53rd Annual Grammy Awards - Hair Trend Report

The 53rd annual Grammy Awards were held at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 13th, where celebrities came out to celebrate the best in music as well as show us their creative style. This year, stars took a playful approach to their hairstyles and kept their looks young, refreshing and fun. We found three hot trends that are all surprisingly easy to re-create at home, below:

Bright Red Hair: It’s known that musicians look forward to the Grammy Awards; so they can artistically express their sense of style – from head to toe. This year, red was the hair color of choice – and seen on the young A-listers, below. For a played-down version of this brightly-colored trend, clip in a few streaks of Put On Pieces Color Strips in Red ($8:

Retro Blunt Bangs: Stars like Lady Antebellum, Faith Evans and Nora Jones revealed bangs that were blunt and eyebrow grazing, taking the usual wispy bang to another level. The best way to achieve this look without making a single cut is to try the Dancing with the Stars Hair Extensions in Bango Tango ($22:, which offer a non-committal way to wear blunt bangs – no matter the style or event!

(Retro Blunt Bangs from left: Lady Antebellum, Faith Evans and Nora Jones)

Sleek Chignons: Instead of coiffed and formal updo’s, celebs opted for simple, pulled back sleek chignons that looked effortless and refreshing. This hairstyle is easy to achieve and looks good on anyone. Add some volume to your chignon by wrapping the Hairdo Wrap Around Pony ($49: to the base your hair ponytail before securing into a chignon.

(Sleek Chignons from left: Eva Longoria, Mya and LeeAnn Rimes)

Beach Waves: Hair trends come and go, but it’s long effortless waves that have become Hollywood’s go-to look. From Miley Cyrus, to Nicole Kidman, celebs wore their hair in loose, polished waves – what’s their secret? Extensions! Extensions are the answer to adding that extra length and volume to achieve this look. To create this look, try Hairdo’s 20 inch Styleable Clip-In Extensions ($99: and the Dancing with the Stars Hair Extensions in Go! Go! Girl ($49: that easily clip-in to create a red-carpet classic!

Valentine's Day Gift Idea: ghd Midnight Collection Gift Set Review

ghd Midnight Collection Gift Set $225

I'm no stranger to ghd flat irons. I've searched high and low for the best flat iron and ghd remains to be the best. They are the Ferrari of flat irons. Even T3 doesn't have anything on this brand! The T3 is a Ford compared to ghd!

The ghd Midnight Collection is a more advanced take on the classic ghd styler. The professional 1" gold styler uses ghd’s latest heat technology. You can buy the new and stunning ghd Midnight Collection Gift Set ($225), which includes a sleek new ghd Gold Professional Styler, an exclusive styler pouch with heat resistant roll mat, and two ghd sectioning clips.

The ghd Gold Professional Styler heats up in no time with the perfect amount heat that will not fry and / or dry out your hair in the process. My hair is wavy and it is pin-straight within minutes! It can even create pin-up worthy waves or voluptuous curls if that is what you desire. I like that I don't even have to use a flat iron spray since this flat iron makes my hair silky and shiny without it! Most flat irons have a tendency to break off my hair, but this isn't the case at all with this flat iron.

Another great thing about the ghd Gold Professional Styler is that it goes on Sleep Mode if not used after 30 minutes. This is good for me since I have a tendency to forget to shut off a flat iron after using it. ghd's new Gold Professional styler is the most luxurious styler in the range to date. Boasting a sleeker design and plates that have been smoothed, contoured and given a high gloss finish, it glides through hair effortlessly to give a beautiful and shiny result.

ghd flat irons may have a hefty price tag, but sometimes you have to pay the price when you want the best....and you will truly get the best with this brand!

ClickR Skin Care Review

clickR Skin Care is here to answer your young skin's call of distress. Created by a cosmetic chemist to help his son's acne issues without overwhelming amounts of chemicals, clickR includes natural plant- and mineral-based ingredients to create gentle, yet effective formulas that deliver real results. This breakthrough brand is also 100% vegan and committed to never testing products on animals. Banish blemishes and save the drama.

I've tried out "hot masks" before and wasn't too thrilled at the idea of trying out the Hot Face Mask ($32) at first. However, the experience wasn't anything like I was expecting it to be. I get a slightly warm sensation whenever I apply this mask, but never to the point where it gets so unbearable and uncomfortable that I am tempted to wash it off immediately. Therefore, I will have to add it to my list of favorites, especially since my skins looks healthier whenever I use it. I've been using it twice a week since I've received it and I've noticed a tremendous difference. I was starting to get breakouts for the last few months, but it is much less now since I've been using this product and an organic facial cleanser.

From first dates to job interviews, we've all got people we want to impress. The purpose of makeup is to enhance your natural beauty, but it is essential to apply the right colors and intensity for every occasion. Whether it be sultry, glam, or au natural, there’s a time and place for every look.

“The same makeup MO doesn’t always work for both day and night; work or play,” says Jessica Lauren, New York-based makeup artist, laser technician and all-around beauty guru. “Many of my clients know the look they want, but need guidance when selecting the appropriate colors and tools.” According to Jessica, most women’s beauty arsenal is stocked with a variety of shades, pencils, glosses and makeup brushes to create multiple looks. But choosing the right look can be a challenge for any beauty buff. “It’s important to consider the occasion you are preparing for, time of day of the event, as well as the time of year,” says Jessica. “It’s also important to match the makeup to your outfit and hairstyle. From head to toe, your overall look should be fluid.”

If you're pounding the pavement in search of a better job, it's only a matter of time before you're called in for a job interview. “Working Girl may be the ultimate chick flick for the career gal, but the tricolor eye shadows, junk jewelry and patterned hoses are…well so 80s,” says Jessica. When it comes to makeup and how much of it you should wear, Jessica notes less is more. “Your look should leave an impression that you are well-groomed and professional. However, if you overdo your makeup, that impression may be the reason you don't get the job.”

The Look:

Skin: Use a tinted moisturizer to keep the skin looking refreshed but not too overdone. It’s best to reserve thick concealers to cover blemishes, dark circles under the eyes and as a shadow base, recommends Jessica. Add some extra pigment with a soft colored blush to gently highlight the cheeks yet maintain a relaxed vibe.

Eyes: To achieve the natural look, Jessica suggests using a light beige eye shadow and then carefully blending a slightly darker shade into the crease of the eyelid. Using a very light or white shade on inner corners of the eyes help you appear more awake. “Keep the natural tone to the eyes by going easy on the eyeliner and light on the mascara,” recommends Jessica.

Lips: Statement colors on the lips should be saved for outside of the office, urges Jessica. Stick with nude or soft berry shades to complete the professional look.

“GTL” baby…Gloss, Touch-Up, Lipstick. “For the ultimate party girl, you need what I call impact makeup,” says Jessica. “Sultry, smoky eyes are always, always a good look for a night out on the town. Finish the smoldering look with glossy nude lips and peachy cheeks.”

The Look:

Skin: Use a liquid foundation followed by a yellow based concealer to spot treat any imperfections and under eye circles, recommends Jessica. Follow with blush on the apples of your cheeks to balance the face and complete the look. Highlight your cheek bones with a touch of luminizer for an added glow.

Eyes: To add fullness to eyebrows, Jessica suggests filling them in with a soft brow pencil followed by a powder shade. Create a sultry look by adding a dark color like coal or taupe in the crease of the eyes. Make the inner eyelids “pop” with a silver or gold shimmer. For a more dramatic effect, Jessica suggests layering two coats of mascara on both the upper and lower lashes.

Lips: Prevent lip color from feathering by using a lip liner. Jessica suggests using a shade that blends in with your lip color. Create a pouty lip with a lip plumping lipstick followed by a gloss with shimmer.

Between picking out the perfect outfit and remembering to bring your Altoids, you have enough to do to get ready for a date let alone thinking about the perfect makeup! “It’s all about fun and flirty makeup on date night,” says Jessica. “For an evening date, you want to focus on your eyes. To add a touch of glamour to your look, opt for shimmery gold eyeshadow. For lips, top with pink liner and sheer gloss.”

The Look:

Skin: Use a mineral liquid foundation that is sheer with a cream concealer to spot treat any redness, dark spots, or under eye darkness. Top with a mineral loose powder to set. For a sun kissed glow, add a bronzer with some shimmer to your forehead, nose, and cheeks. Lightly brush bronzer onto your chest as well for a consistent glow.

Eyes: “You want to make sure it’s not too heavy, but enough to draw him in,” says Jessica. Apply a bronze or champagne color shadow to the eyes with a darker color in the crease. Use mascara that adds length to the upper and lower lashes.

Lips: For a night out, Jessica suggests going with peachy pinks topped with a gloss that is the same color as the lipstick, but adds some shine.

Meeting a man’s parents for the first time can always evoke a bit of anxiety. After all, you want to make a good impression. “People tend to read a lot into someone’s personality based on how the person looks. Right or wrong, it’s human nature,” says Jessica. “Don’t go over the top with your makeup - think pretty and natural. Save the smokey eyes for girls’ night out.”

The Look:

Skin: For a natural look that will provide more than enough coverage, Jessica suggests using a mineral powder over a mineral concealer. Enhance natural beauty with a soft pink or soft peach cream blush.

Eyes: For this occasion, Jessica suggests leaving the shimmer eye shadows in the makeup bag. Keep the soft, natural look going with neutral color shadows like earth tones or soft mauves in matte.

Lips: Keep it light with a tinted lip balm or clear gloss, but nothing that is too shiny.

Instantpeel Natural Exfoliant Review

The Instantpeel Natural Exfoliant ($50) is a very gentle and effective at-home facial home. While the price may be a bit steep for some, it is worth the price opposed to getting a facial peel at a salon. It is much more effective when you use it in the shower, which also makes it easier to remove dead skin cells without irritating your skin in the process. I love how soft and smooth my face feels after I use the Instantpeel Natural Exfoliant. Each box comes with 6 single-use packets. I think I've been getting the most out of it by using one a week. I highly recommend this brand if you'd like to have more youthful and healthier skin!

Jennifer Aniston Eau de Parfum

Jennifer Aniston Eau de Parfum $39 - $70

In the creation of her debut fragrance, Jennifer Aniston called to mind her earliest and most beloved recollections of scent. Evoking memories of sunny days at the beach and happy summer nights, this captivating composition includes light, blooming floral notes set against a sensual base of musk and woods.

"I wanted this fragrance to be a personal library of scent memories. For example, my love of night blooming jasmine has lasted a lifetime. Growing up in California, I distinctly remember the scent of jasmine on summer evenings. I consider the scent of the ocean to be one of life's most uplifting sensual experiences. No aroma is quite so purifying, humbling and exhilarating. The combination of the salty air and tropical oils reminds me of long sunny days on the beach-pure happiness."Jennifer Aniston

The bottle, inspired by Jennifer's love and appreciation of architecture, references the flow of a Frank Gehry building and the fluidity of a cresting wave.
